People across
the country are applauding this lady (and I believe, rightly so) for
beating her teenage son on national television to get him out of the
(possibly lethal) danger of being involved in the riots in Baltimore.
It was, in my opinion, the right response and that's as much as I'm
going to say about someone who I know nothing else about. But on the
flip side, I find it ironic that many of the people holding this woman
up for praise are also the reason why so many other parents have to
whisper and look furtively around if they want to admit that they
occasionally spank their children (to prevent them from growing up into
riotous thugs) for fear of a visit from DCF, or worse, being arrested?

Re: Hundreds turn out as Connecticut debates aid in dying measure

So then, you were against the Rev. But I think our discussion is moving into areas of political science, natural law, social contracts, zeitgeist, etc. I think we as a people are moving into a time when the notion of legitimate authority and the rule of law is crumbling before our eyes in a sea of moral relativism.

Re: Michelle Carter, 18, Encouraged Friend to Commit Suicide, Police Say : People.com

Of course anybody can kill themselves no matter what law is in place. Hardly. If Bob picks up a gun and shoots Joe, Bob has committed an act of violence and force upon Joe's body and life. If Bob picks up the gun and shoots himself, he has committed the same act of violence upon his own body and life.

I make no bones that I am a Catholic, so I believe that we are creatures made in the image and likeness of God. As such, I believe that we exercise our self-determination not as owners of our lives, but as stewards. Our lives are not ours to take, but to give.

Re: Michelle Carter, 18, Encouraged Friend to Commit Suicide, Police Say : People.com

In all the same ways you would, short of killing them, apparently. A person through normal course of the day won't end up dead. The attempt to take one's life is where the initial force comes in. Lack of force, and other normal circumstances lead to the person continuing their life, until their body gives out by disease, disaster or old age. I'm not forcing anyone to do anything.

We did not create our own lives, and it is our nature to prolong our life as long as possible. We have no more right to take our own life as we do to take another's life. Life is the gift of our creator, and it is His to take.

Re: Michelle Carter, 18, Encouraged Friend to Commit Suicide, Police Say : People.com

I would reject that self-determination includes suicide. The New Testament was written down by witnesses to Jesus Christ's resurrection and intervention in the early Church, many of whom went to their death rather than just easily dismissing it as hogwash. It's plausible that people may willingly give their life for something that they believe to be true. It is something else entirely to have them die for something you claim that they must have known to be false.

Re: Michelle Carter, 18, Encouraged Friend to Commit Suicide, Police Say : People.com

I know you were arguing against my point, but what I'm saying is that the same evidence will be used to broaden the scope of PAS, just as it has already been in Belgium, where they are already teetering on the edge of outright euthanasia. As a society, and with the current crop of politicians, both left and right, we are no longer swayed by arguments of reason, but by cheap appeals to emotion. "You're against PAS? What, do you want Grandma to suffer?" etc. If the door is opened, and I agree with all the points you made, by the way, inevitably we will succomb to the argument that this suffering over here is just as bad and this person should be allowed to kill themself. And this person over here who is suffering and unconscious, but cannot express his thoughts, ought to be allowed to die rather than suffer needlessly. And finally, this person who is suffering is obviously just better off dead, and we're going to make the decision to end their life rather than continue to treat needlessly and at our cost.

Re: Michelle Carter, 18, Encouraged Friend to Commit Suicide, Police Say : People.com

Your epidermis is showing.

Re: Michelle Carter, 18, Encouraged Friend to Commit Suicide, Police Say : People.com

Sarah, I have seen severe depression in my own family and I sympathize with the struggle you go through. People saying, don't worry PAS is only for terminally ill people who are not depressed, are deluding themselves. You can't quantify one person's suffering vs. another's. It will all become a reason to kill oneself.
