I have to note on your mention of Tumblr's front page being wasted real estate: Tumblr's goal, in my opinion, is simplicity. Their front page reflects that, as does their Dashboard. I don't know about most users, but I never visit the front page of tumblr unless I'm on a computer that isn't my own. Even then, my main goal is to log in and see what everyone I follow has posted.

I'm more likely to find content from it being reblogged or have it being shown on the Radar of my Dashboard.

Tumblr is about community, not publicity.

What they need to do is add a "dislike" button to these as well. Up and Down-voting things has become standard on other sites (YouTube, Reddit, etc.), you'd think they'd add this to Facebook as well.
