I'm still not sure what is legal for me to play, and how to field it. I have Militarum, GK, and a pair of Knights and I genuinely don't even know where to start looking. It made me give up on 40k because I never knew what toys the system allowed me to play and how that worked.

Without the app I would find it impossible. I have a lot of sympathy for "using an illegal list" but that's just me. I realize these guys were at a tournament and should know those rules.

Re: Starfinder: Can You Escape PLANET DEATH

I'm working on the sequel as well! I'm hoping the use of "the marker" implies "last marker placed" in the case of multiple markers then.

Re: 40K: Guilliman’s Big Reveal – Rules & More!

I'm still trying to figure out the timing of a marker removal. As it isn't defined in the BRB that I can find, or this model (like it is for Tau Markerlight Counters) I don't know if the dead primarch marker ever gets removed.

I don't think it does. So if you take him down and he gets up, at least you'll score for him. Not that taking him down is gonna be easy!

This brings up problems with multiple markers staying in play, and him possibly teleporting around, so that makes me assume they DID want the markers removed, but the rules never call for it (and other rules do, setting precedent).

I'll keep looking for how markers work (I can only find blast markers atm, and I'm reasonably sure that's not what they meant). Maybe it's someplace I missed.

Re: 40k Gamers: Are You Whipped?

Yes. Yes I am. Every Inquisition release proves it.

But no, not by a spouse, just GW itself :)

Re: 40K Rumors: 8th Edition Changes Direction

If they are looking to speed up gameplay the need to start with the dice rolling. Rolling a ton of dice is fine, but we roll three times to resolve each shot (more in some cases). If you adjusted the math to use fewer rolls, that would speed up the game considerably.

However, another big slowdown is looking up rules (because of bloat) as well as all the additional randomization they put into the game.

Here's a trick guys, take all the randomization and make it a player choice. There, now the game requires more skill, plays faster at higher skill levels, and if done right it can add a self-balancing mechanic.

It's more work than just copy-paste and a few edits, you have to... you know... test... and probably with an open beta. If that hasn't happened, they simply do not have the number of games played to know where their long term problems lie.

Without beta testing, a modern miniatures game simply cannot achieve balance. You wouldn't design a car without testing. These games are complex. It's hard sometimes, and work. That's why game design is a job.

If there is no beta process external from the design team, that's going to be a big flashing light. The basically beta-tested Sigmar and added the point totals after its public release (aka, beta).

Re: 40K: The (Psychic) Power of Choice

My resistance to a system like this has nothing to do with balance. The game is already complex enough, and this system adds another layer of complexity paint to the wall.

But if balance is a concern, then I'd be worried that rules like these would create a widening power gulf between the haves and have nots of psychic powers. Reliability is a big deal in a game like 40k, and giving so much, even at a steep cost, will give armies that rely on specific psychic powers a big leg up.

Of course, only testing will tell, but an overhaul of the powers themselves would need to happen for such a drastic shift in process.

Re: New 40k FAQ’s and Hilarity Ensues

He provided the information and gave opinion on it. I might not be possible logistically (Gen con is a big push for us, and often we have to get the product shipped to us there, then we send it back to our warehouse to go out, or we have some there, but not a lot). I design the games, so I'm just guessing. But I'll make sure the right people know that if we can figure something out, it will help a lot.

Re: Quest for Fun!: Top Game Companies 2012

As a developer for a game company (Wyrd) this is a fantastic slice of information. You're right that we shouldn't read the world into the data, but there is a lot to consider even with your caveats. I especially appreciate you "Coca Cola Line". I think that kind of baseline is extremely useful.

I do have a question (although self serving so my apologies). I'm curious how Wyrd sits on the list. It looks like we are in the "Other" category, but if you don't currently carry us (Malifaux mainly) then that would also explain it.

What can we do improve that? Is it just a matter of growing our brand, or is there something that, for your store at the least, holds us under the line? Again, fantastic post!

Re: Warhammer 40k, Fantasy, Wargames & Miniatures News: Bell of Lost Souls

Obviously, the post-forumula thesis requires a re-defining of a considerable number of our process and resolution procedures. While games such as Infinity may seem, on the surface, to be "enjoyable" simply because I, and so many others experience a sensation, or emotional quasi-state, that one would traditionally define as "pleasure", it becomes increasingly important for me to stubbornly defend views that I don't really feel passionate about by employing a logical tactical that is essentially a "filli-bluster", to coin a phrase. Otherwise, I might allow myself to grow as a person, and we wouldn't want that. I'm fat enough.

Re: Warhammer 40k, Fantasy, Wargames & Miniatures News: Bell of Lost Souls

I certainly like infinity. The one that I've been enjoying recently has been Dystopian wars. I'm not what you would call a "naval battles" guy. Thematically it doesn't hook me. The mechanics, however, are nice and fluid (HAHA PUN!... GET IT? NAVY? FLUID! I KNOW RIGHT!) plus the resolution system is clean. Although my friend usually beats me... so obviously something is broken.

Re: Warhammer 40k, Fantasy, Wargames & Miniatures News: Bell of Lost Souls

Support my point?
