I know I'm a week late on this one but I have to share my story. My mother is a nurse, a neonatal nurse practitioner to be exact, and she was good friends my whole life with Dr. Z, a neonatal specialist who had a pediatric practice. This woman came to my birthday and graduation parties, ate at our dinner table, the whole shebang. Several years before I got pregnant my mom and Dr. Z sort of drifted apart but in the middle of my pregnancy with my first child (which ended up being high-risk) the ran into each other. Dr. Z heard of my pregnancy and my several trips to the hospital to have my pre-term labor stopped and enthusiastically told my mom she'd love to be the baby's doctor, have Meredith call me blah blah blah.

My daughter was born at 38 weeks with several minor issues and almost wasn't discharged because she'd lost so much of her birth weight. Dr. Z had a family emergency and apparently didn't notify her back-up doctor in time to have him like, SEE the baby before she was discharged. The nurses kept apologizing and calling her service.

I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt because of her family issue. Five days later my baby and I were home and I called her office to make the first appointment. Five minutes after making the appointment the secretary called me back to tell me (and I quote), "the doctor doesn't feel she can meet your expectations and she would prefer you find someone else."

I had a baby who would hardly eat who was losing weight and no freaking doctor. I am somewhat grateful to the witch because the after the ensuing hormonal breakdown, my husband's angry call to the office and the drama of finding another doctor quickly, I found the most amazing doctor for my girls. But if I ever see Dr. Z in public I fear I will end up jail.

Re: A Day at the Farmer's Market

I officially want to take Bruiser home with me. How cute is that little guy running around in his bathing suit? Seriously, if he goes missing do not worry. I will feed him well and give him lots of snuggles. What a sweet boy!

Re: A New Preschool Perspective

I think it totally depends on several factors, including the kid, the parent, the school itself and what you want for your child at that point in time.

As a preschool teacher I do bristle at scarymommy's assertion that preschool is "pretty much bullshit." Every school is different, especially at the preschool level. It may not be grad school but preschool can be a wonderful, educational experience even if it's not completely necessary for every family.

My girls go to preschool and honestly it's a different experience for each of them, even in the same school. My oldest needed it for reasons that weren't totally educational, more social. My youngest probably does not NEED it right now but I'd like her to get some of her early education from someone other than myself. Personal preference is all.

At any rate I'm so glad that your Punky is having such a great kindergarten experience so far!!

Re: Worst. Job. Ever.

I worked night shift at a bread bakery/factory in Israel. One of my jobs there was to stand next to a conveyor belt that brought me balls of dough. I would pick up a ball of dough and transfer it - with my hand, no fancy tools or anything - and place it on another conveyor belt going a different direction. Sometimes, when it got really crazy, I got to pick up TWO balls of dough at the SAME TIME and place them together on the second conveyor belt. No walking, no lifting, too loud for conversation. Just standing, moving my right arm from one conveyor belt to another. For eight hours. At least I got to wear a really cool paper hair net. That truly made it all worth while.

Re: A Post Guaranteed to Make Me EVEN MORE POPULAR at My Daughter's School

OMG! So the teachers are helping Master Chin? How did the flier get into her school work? I would be pissed. Not to mention the paper that wastes. I don't know if it's normal because my kids are still in preschool but eww. If this is normal I will just go ahead and give up any hopes of being popular at the school because I foresee some Mommy tantrums.

Re: A Public Service Announcement

Oooooh, oooooh! I would raise some hell about not being able to walk in and pick up my child - how can they prevent this really? Hmmmm maybe we need to start a list of activities to kill time while waiting in pick up line?

Re: The One Who Got Left Behind

Oh my gosh! Bruiser calling her name softly at the door got me. I'm tearing up at that picture. Poor guy. I can't wait to hear how his mother's morning out group goes.

Re: Too Fabulous Not to Share

Thank you!!

Re: The Death Talk

Wow, it sounds like you did a great job!

Re: Tales from the Redneck Riviera

Awesome post! I sometimes catch a weird look from dolled up moms at the playground as I frolic with my kids in the dirt. I don't care, I'd rather be dirty.
