If you have python installed you can quickly start a simple http server in the publc folder using:

python -m SimpleHTTPServer

In our company we've really liked Django (Python web framework) and it's admin app, alas 2 show stoppers: No Hebrew and No BiDi (right to left) support. So we've added those, and it accepted into upstream.

I think the main goal of such changes is pushing the code upstream - you don't want to keep maintaining those yourself with each new version (plus others can help fixing bugs).

One thing: Make as little changes as possible to the original code, change/modify too much when not needed (as evident by your example) and increase your chances of upstream rejection.

For me at least it became one of the factors in choosing frameworks to base upon: Upstream's willingness accepting patches.

Not to mention other problems it creates, like different cookies for those domains, I'm having this problem at whatsup.org.il which is actually available in 4 domains (.org.il, .co.il and prefixed with www).
