It seems like DeShawn was just sitting in his own room. I don't see how the police would come to the conclusion that he was a burglar... outside of making assumptions based on race.

Re: Hangeul Day Giveaway – Travel Phrases and Korean Slangs

I'm not sure if the picture is showing up, but my name is Melanie!

Re:

I am not obligated to justify a background in IT; my "obvious" lack of understanding of "the internet," WANs, and LANs is irrelevant to your original reply to Ryan Gordon.

When you commented with the words, "the internet," it is assumed that you were talking about a stable connection to the World Wide Web. Therefore, I answered your original question, "What do you need the internet for at school?"

Re:

San Jose State's costly high-tech upgrade with Cisco faces setbacks, questions

I don't know when you went to school, but technology has changed what being a student in university looks like. I'm in my last year of school, and through the 4 years I've been at SJSU, the internet has changed how classes are executed. Let me give you a few examples:

Professors stopped giving hard copy handouts and notes in
class because their budget for printing was cut to make the campus more "environmentally friendly." If professors give their students handouts, the money doesn't come from the school. What this means is that students often have to go online to find notes or readings that go with their lectures.

Research databases are now completely online. Sure, it is possible to look up the same databases physically in the library, but it isn't realistic for a student to do so. Because the internet has made the process of gathering research material much more efficient, assignments are given to students at lightning speed, sometimes. A university student these days simply does not have enough time to spend their time looking through a physical library catalog. Not to mention, at SJSU, a student's time is often spread between work, extracurricular activities, family, and assignments.

Internet use in the university setting doesn't just affect students; its become more important in the professors' workflow, too. Sometimes, professors want an assignment at 11:59pm on Sunday. A student living on campus, unless he or she goes off campus to find a connection, will be completely dependent on the internet at school to get this assignment in. They won't snail mail their assignment to their professor 3 days ahead, thinking, "What if the internet goes down over the weekend?" Not to mention, a professor most likely won't appreciate getting an assignment by mail.

Given these example situations, it's not realistic to say that the internet is just "a want" to a university student -- it is very much a necessity. It's not
the 90s anymore. In the present setting, the internet is no longer just a digital wonderland for frolicking and looking up free pornography.

Re: Irrational Want of the Day: Cup Shitsuki, the Cup Noodle Humidifier

Haha!
