Why a Mastermind Group Can Accelerate Your Success (And How to Form One)

Very helpful article, Corey. My situation is probably a little different than others'. I live in a very small town and would prefer to start a local in-person Mastermind group. The only trouble is, I know of only two people who might be a good fit. I've talked with one of them, and I think she'll be on board if I get it started.

I'm willing to put it out there -- say, via my personal Facebook page -- directed to local friends and acquaintances. Since they are locals, I'm concerned about the vetting process. Don't want to alienate someone I might see in the grocery store. Any suggestions about the words to use if someone's interested but I don't think they'd be a good match?

I suspect the answer is in the initial criteria I set, but not sure I'll think of everything. I'd appreciate any words of wisdom. :>)

Re: Do you suffer from Irritable Desk Syndrome?

I wonder if this is a syndrome more common with freelancers. When I worked in an office and knocked off at 5 p.m., I would start clearing my desk at about 4:45 so I could leave right on time. And every morning I'd come in to a clear desk. On Friday afternoons, we'd all dust our desks. Now that I work exclusively at home, I tend to work until I just have to get out of the office and leave the desk as it is, telling myself I can clear it later.

Love your 5S system, Chris. Thanks.

Re: What a circus act can teach you about writing…

I'm so thankful the claim that multitasking is a virtue has lost its appeal. Our world is so much more peaceful without it.

And thanks for this reminder and great image of concentrating on those things we can control! I definitely worry too much about the outcome. It's immobilizing.

Re: Feel like you’re wasting time with your crappy first draft? I can see how outlining might tempt you to adapt your ideas so they fit into boxes, which would confine your creative thinking. Thank you! Helps me realize why sometimes I'm stifled.

Re: Feel like you’re wasting time with your crappy first draft? Would you use mind-mapping every time? Or would having a loose outline be enough?

Re: #028: How Focus@Will Improves Focus, Productivity and Creativity

Ed, I've heard you talk about Focus@Will before -- even signed up -- but had never really used it. After this podcast I decided to give it a try. I'm really enjoying it -- especially the timer. Starting my little desk timer used to be the signal for me to get busy -- and know when to stop. The quiet "ding" at the end of the session is much more pleasant than the annoying 10-minute and 5-minute warning rings of the timer -- and is much more effective.

I think it may have helped my creativity, too. I just wrote what I thought was a killer 30-second radio ad! Thanks!

Re: Recommended reading: Summer 2014

One book in common and another two I recently read with our local book club: I came across The Art of Racing in the Rain by accident -- but thoroughly enjoyed it as well. I do like dogs -- and cats -- although not racing -- and I loved the story from a dog's point of view. It made me wonder just how much our dog understands!

Two others: Left Neglected by Lisa Genova. It's fiction about a woman who suffers brain damage in an auto accident, but so believable you'd think it was autobiographical. Well written, too.

The other -- and I didn't expect to like this one -- Watership Down by Richard Adams. I'd heard about it -- it's become a classic. But it's about rabbits, of all things. I'm putting off finishing the book because I'm going to miss the little guys, with all their adventures.

Re: What a recording studio taught me about writing planning

I have a writing/coaching acquaintance -- Kaarina Dillabough -- who writes about having a Will-Do list instead of a To-Do list, stating that "To-Do lists never get ta-dun." That one-word change has really helped me accomplish my daily goals -- especially when I follow it with the word "today." Funny enough, that also helps me to be realistic about exactly what can be done today.

I like the way your "must-do today" suggestion also involves a "how" and "when." Thanks!

Re: The American Idol

Well said, as usual. I didn't see this version of The Sound of Music -- so I don't have to feel bad about being critical. If I ever do see it, I'll have your words in my head. LOVE the photos of the older Audrey Hepburn. She looks happy and at peace in them -- much more so than those earlier photos.

Re: Why Paleo Is a Crock

Hilarious, Nika. And yes -- she IS her father's daughter.

It makes me tired just thinking of trying to keep up with her when she starts walking on her own. For your sake, I'm actually hoping you get to adjust to her crawling first!

Thanks for the update. I have a VERY strong feeling she's going to be curious about and want to get into EVERYTHING!

But she won't let you be irritated about it, because she's just so cute!
