It seems that I notice detail much quicker and easier in the color photos.

Could this be why we see in color? A survival thing, perhaps?

I also noticed that in some photos something more than the addition of color has been changed. The most obvious is the one with the GI in a gas mask is emerging from the 'cloud'. But then, colorizing is really an art form and somethings may be next to impossible to reproduce.
