But -- and this isn't to disagree with Erik Loomis's assertion -- shouldn't we at least acknowledge a bunch of contributing factors, starting with our hollowed-out institutions that made collapsing them with a good strong exhale surprisingly easy for Trump to do? Probably ought to include our original sin in there too.

Re: Randy Barnett’s unending trauma over a black man having been president

I didn't think Barnett was making a joke. How is this dementia rather than, say, raging megalomania?

Would someone with dementia look at a map of North America and describe the border between the U.S. and Canada as "artificial ... Crazy maybe, but I don't know if it qualifies as dementia.

Re: Dunces of the Confederacy

Lol. Milley broke the chain of command, which he shouldn't have done. Many will also feel he did the right thing. Both things will be true. I sometimes think that's the built-in fail-safe -- someone will do the right thing by violating the Constitution in some fashion and then, as he (or she) must, fall on his sword, because that is the price that must be exacted to prevent this sort of thing from becoming commonplace.

Will Biden want him to resign? If so, I assume that's what will happen. But what if he doesn't? In fact, at this point what do we have? We have a book by Woodward and Costa, who (Woodward, that is) has a history of coming up with "exclusives that read as a bit too good to check." (That's from Josh Marshall.) Do you ask for someone's resignation based on a book that doesn't disclose its sources? And if no one comes forward to vouch for the veracity of this or that revelation?

Maybe it's just my mood, but at the moment I feel like Milley should just lie. (Again, this is assuming Biden doesn't want his resignation.) Or if that's a bridge too far (and I suppose it is), then just refuse to confirm or deny. And stick on that.

Steve says he believes Trump was unlikely to drop a bomb on a foreign enemy under the circumstances. Maybe that's right. Steve has great instincts about a lot of things, but how can any of us know what Trump was likely to do? And Milley was right there, in the proverbial room.

So I guess we'll see.

Re: No More Mister Nice Blog: WHY IS KEVIN DRUM MEASURING WHAT EACH PARTY'S VOTERS SAY AND NOT WHAT EACH PARTY'S POLITICIANS DO?

Wow. I had really looked forward to reading it and wanted to like it. But it was terrible for any number of reasons. With regard specifically to GOP talking points (and bullshit arguments in support thereof), Vance's defense of payday lenders was particularly egregious. He gave as a personal example of when payday loans can be useful a time as a student when he needed to pay a bill -- rent, I think. He had the money, having just received a paycheck from his part-time job, but he didn't have cash on hand (which he needed to pay the rent) and wouldn't until the following Monday. Too proud to ask for help (roll eyes), or to explain the situation to his landlord (roll eyes again -- personal responsibility, you see), he got cash from a payday lender to pay the rent, then promptly repaid the loan on Monday.

Well, gosh darn, JD. If you have the money to repay the payday loan on the following business day, you just aren't in the same fucking situation as most of the people who fall prey to payday lenders, now are you?

Re: No More Mister Nice Blog: HAVE YOU PEOPLE LEARNED NOTHING?

Yeah, this is bad.
