Same thing for when the initial 'hit' is over on social media for businesses.

Re: Women of Google+ : Molly Howard

Thanks for the link. People are entitled to use Google+ as they see fit, Molly included. Individuals that use their accounts for illegal or illicit activities won't be listed here (I have received a few for inclusion - which I have not). Strong opinions or language is not a reason for me to 'ban' a profile here. It is up to each person viewing these Women of Google+ profiles to make the decision on their own if they find value in what's listed here.

I do very much appreciate your comment and am glad that we have 'eyes on the street' so to speak! Thank you very much John! I hope you find value in what you find here.

Re: The Secret Formula for Getting Business From Speeches

Knowing the audience you are about to speak to, in my opinion, shows your respect for what they do. If you can't show interest in them, there is no way they are going to care about what comes out of your mouth. I speak /train at a lot of non-social media conferences and make it a point to understand their lingo. Do they have employees or partners, customers or clients, how long is their sales cycle, am I talking to worker bees or c-suite, etc. It's because of their business I am standing in front of them earning a buck and speaking. I just did a talk this past weekend for an insurance industry conference, and emptied a box of business cards into the hands of attendees afterwards. Why? Because I spoke to their level of understanding because I did my research and spent 3/4 of the time answering questions and helping. I also booked 4 more speaking gigs right then and there.

Care about your audience, don't pitch to them. It works.

Re: Google Makes Gender a Privacy Setting

Wesley, I'm glad you brought this up! Now that I'm finally getting feedback (new project - WomenOfGPlus.com) it honestly feels a bit weird to me. I'm very used to giving and not really great at accepting praise or anything. My gut reaction is to turn the focus back on everyone else because I am fearful of being seen as greedy and self-centered. At the same time I crave the (positive) notoriety because I've been working my *ass* off for decades and always seem to disappear behind the scenes.

Re: Writing Your Own Unique Content

Thanks everyone! After writing this, I got to thinking about the short fiction story that I've had in my head for some time now, but never get around to writing. I also have several proposals for business books but never seem to get the courage to submit them - as there are already books in print with similar topics by A-Listers. I should really take my own advice!

Re: How-To : Hide your friend / follower count in Google+

I'm sure each person's reasons for wanting to hide their counts are different. If you take a look at http://socialstatistics.com, you will see that many of the top followed have zero 'friends'. In their case this might be done to protect the identity of the people *they* follow (could very well be family, etc.)

Re: Why You Should Feed the Guppies in Google+

My account is LynetteRadio for Google/Gmail but I do use my 'legal name' Lynette Young in my G+ profile. But there has been some flack to Google for requiring a gender to be selected (thankfully there is 'other'). A person can choose to hide their gender in their profile settings so even though they entered a gender, the public does not have access to it.

Re: Why are only 10% of Google+ users women?

It was speculation from others on the total number of users active in Google+ right now. G+ right now is for testing, beta, playing, and geeks. Once it settles down the public will figure out where it fits in to their life/work. Right now the people that should be in here are those hardcore early adopters that bang the junk out of the system to find its flaws and strengths.
Casual users of social media probably won't get any benefit out of it, and will wind up spinning their wheels sucking time away from established connections. If you can't figure out how you are 'supposed' to use G+ and feel it should be better designed for your use - you are exactly the type of user that should not be in a closed beta release. Just my geek opinion.

Re: Yes, I Want to Speak at Your Event

I may have to borrow some of your wording ;) I am jumping up and down screaming THANK YOU for writing this. I've been told I was unrealistic and *greedy* to ask to have my travel covered or get a speaking stipend. To be truthful, I speak fairly often but am not an A-Lister (such as Gary V or Brogan) and have been told I should be thankful to be offered the opportunity to speak and to consider it exposure. Exposure doesn't feed my family, sorry.

PS - I love the picture you chose... It pretty much says "You want me to take money out of my own wallet to help you put some in yours? Problem with this is that professionals that need to understand this space usually view Camps as amateur hour. They are NOT.

Big name conferences mostly appeal to the existing practitioners of social media and from the outside appear to be preaching to the choir. I personally decided to do something about it - and now am putting together the Podcasting Pavilion at BlogWorld Expo (presented by Social Media Club) this year in NYC (with hopes of LA as well). The goal of the Pavilion is to start exposing both 'hardcore' social media professionals and newbies to things that existed before Facebook and Twitter. This will start expanding people's education and understanding of what new / social media means and how they can use it. We are going back to the community, to discussions, and to learning. No formal presentations, the Pavilion is all about peer-to-peer conversations (facilitated by knowledgeable pros).

People that don't have knowledge of social media and podcasting are very unlikely to know about industry conferences (or un-conferences), so in my view it's up to US to help them find their way and show them the value of attending and *participating*.

Re: 3 Ways Companies Can Reach Generation Z

I highly doubt the purchasing habits of my 3 or 9 year olds will carry through into their 30's. People in this now-coined Generation Z Don't have their own income (yet) or enough influence with the parental units to actively shape an entire generation -or lifetime - of consumer purchases. If that's the case I would still be making my clothing choices based on what had glitter, rainbows, unicorns or Luke Skywalker on them. I call bullshit.
