It'd go well with their cloud business and game streaming goals.

The fact that Google is headed down that path should at least raise some eyebrows within Microsoft, and Silverlight existing before Fuchsia gives them some prior code and experience to work with in this space.

They could keep the existing Win32 and UWP app platforms for backwards compatibility (maybe even sandbox the Win32 apps for extra security), and attract developers with the newer platform.

Re: Thurrott: It’s “Game Over”, “UWP will disappear”

The issue here is developer awareness.

UWP features coming to Win32 apps isn't new, the only new thing Microsoft has announced there is you can now use those UI controls you've just called terrible.

Since Windows 8, Win32 apps could access most WinRT app features, that carried over into Windows 10 with UWP.

Google Chrome is a good example of an app that hooks into a lot of WinRT/UWP features and nobody notices.

Re: This guy built a smartwatch from scratch, resurrecting the idea behind Pebble

I still use my Pebble Time Steel for the same reasons he made this.

It would be awesome if he joined the Rebble community, since they're mostly focused on the same goals (just doing a little bit more, like small app support).

Re: Mozilla outlines plan to replace Firefox for Android with 'Fenix'

"architecture under the hood (GeckoView instead of Gecko)"

Just here to say that GeckoView is Gecko, it's just easier to embed in Android apps (GeckoView is like WebView for Gecko), still the same rendering engine overall. Any flaws in that just require a browser update. That's what they're leaning to.

They've been pushing backwards compatibility, cross buy, cross saves and cross play heavy for a reason, even cross play and saves with other platforms (Xbox Live on Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android for instance).
They've even repeatedly mentioned being interested in bringing backwards compatibility to general Windows 10 PCs.
Link: https://www.onmsft.com/news...

Their end game is just "Buy it from the Microsoft Store on Windows 10".
My only worry is they seem to be tilted against physical copies of games (no cross buy for them, rumors of a console without a disc drive).

But other than that, their strategy seems to be less about streaming than Sony's does.
It's just about Windows 10.

They've even started to tout their Xbox Live Gold and Game Pass subscriber numbers over console sales, as this number would count all Windows 10 users (plus Windows Phone 7, Windows 8 and Xbox 360 users).

Seriously listen to any moment they talk about the future of Xbox Live, they always say something like "We want people to play anywhere, anyway they'd like".
Windows 10 being on desktops, laptops, tablets, phones, TVs, VR headsets, AR headsets, etc... fits that bill.
It also fits the mold of competing with Android, iOS, the web and even the Nintendo Switch (handheld and home console all in one).

Game streaming doesn't fit that mold.

EDIT: Also just to share, the Xbox division made Microsoft $10 billion this year. Higher than it ever has. It's doing just fine. Also they partly credit that to "cloud services", but xCloud doesn't exist yet. This means they're talking the Microsoft Store and subscriptions.

Link: https://www.ign.com/article...

Re: Finally!
