I guess that a film like "Lord of the flies" is much better photographed and acted because it´s probably harder to get a high quality doing a documentary like this. On the other hand you get the real thing and it´s probably the reason for why many people like to watch reality shows.

Re: Life Is Hot in Cracktown – (film preview)

I usually like these sociorealistic films, as far as they are not too conventionally made. French films are often the best in this genre, but similar films from the US unfortunately are often produced using the expected conventional formula without any new angles attached. However, this particular film actually caught my interest, and I will most probably buy it on DVD when it comes available on Aug 25.

Re: When I Got Jesus With a Slingshot

Sounds like a good coming of age tale about a growing up experience. Acording to the trailer the cast also seems talented. This is probably a film I would like to watch!
/Lucas

Re: Frantsuz

My first thoughts went to the Russian coming of age film "The return" as you also mention in the end of your review. Both films deal with the relationship between fathers and sons, with the father playing the role of the family´s authority, trying to raise his sons by fear and violence instead of love. Another film with a similar theme is the Spanish film "El bola". Your review got me interested in watching this film "Frantsuz" in the near future!

Re: The Cistern

This was a very good review of the film, and I would definitely say yes to the initial questions. I like challenges and films where you must think twice. Despite what I said in my last review on my own blog, it´s sometimes more thrilling if you don´t get the story too well prepared like you get with most mainstream films. On the other hand it can be really frustrating if you feel that the director or storywriter haven´t thought it through enough and just tried some kind of weird ending to a story or just put in some twist just because they felt it would be more interesting, but with no actual respect to the story or film itself. How the case is in this film I don´t know. Since I liked the review and because of the challenge I will of course get this film as soon as possible!

Re: Captain Johnno

I remember watching the trailer to the movie "Time of the gypsies" (Dom za vesanje), in where there is a short scene when a young boy has to depart from his mother to go to the city for a longer time to work (I think). Though I still haven´t seen the full length film, I haven´t forgotten the strong feeling of sadness in that departuring scene. If someone wants me to cry (which I never do of course) he just has to show me a film with such a scene I guess.

I think this seems like a film that I would like to watch. It is a very good review with not just describing the plot but also analyzing the story. I have never known anyone who´s deaf and don´t know how it would be like to have a deaf friend, but I guess I would learn to communicate very soon. Well I will write a better comment after watching this movie!

Re: Je suis le seigneur du château

This movie seems to be a bit of a challenge to watch, according to the violence in it, yet still very interesting and with excellent music by Prokofiev. I will have to watch it soon.

Re: Drawings

The first drawing is yours of course!

/Lucas

Re: Flickr favorites #2

Number 4 and 10 are the best in this collection in my humble opinion. I like the number 4 because it gives you a sence of speed and at the same time is very calm. I also like the red background. The number 10 I like despite the fact that I´m very, very afraid of heights. I remember once when I was riding the ferris wheel at Pratern in Vienna, when I had to lie flat on the floor in the wagon in order not to faint. That was not very fun, especially since there were also other people in the wagon. Since then I have challenged myself by going on some attractions at amusement parks that include some height just to make up for that previous (rather humiliating) experience. The boys in the picture however don´t seem to have any problems of that kind, or have they been challenging each other to go near the edge?

Re: A boring life?

I´ve thought rather much about my life too, and therefore I find the topic we are discussing here very interesting. Interestingly enough I also think that this matter is actually only interesting to us who wouldn´t like to have the "boring life", because people who already are completely satisfied with their "ordinary" lives don´t tend to think so much about it. That´s why I think that only the simple fact that we are having this discussion is a proof of that we prefer the "roller coaster-life", with its ups and downs instead of having a peaceful walk through life. Of course the walking would be much easier, but also much more boring. And you would never know how it feels when falling down the hill, and you would never know the feeling of joy and thrill when you´re going up again. Actually you wouldn´t even understand if someone tried to tell you about his roller coaster experience, since if you had never tried it you couldn´t possibly know how it is like.
I´m sure I prefer the roller coaster, and even if my present life sometimes make me have to walk some miles to get to the amusement park, I certainly make sure I get there!

Re: Friendship between a girl and a boy – Mission Impossible ?

This is a very tricky thing. You´ll never know what will happen when you tell about your feelings for another, for example a girl you like. I don´t want to give any advice here, just saying it´s not easy. But what I can say is that you shouldn´t forget that friendship is also a kind of love, and that it often lasts longer than a romantic relationship (unless you´ve found the love of your life). Sometimes it´s also possible to become good friends with someone that you have had a romantic relationship with, but after the romance has ended. In my life friendship is very important, and I love my friends. And one day I´ll find the love of my life, and I hope that person would become my best friend too.

Re: Soft Like Me (1996)

I didn´t know there were so many interesting short films out there in the coming of age genre, but you have really found several, like this one for example. Though the story here seems a bit weird, it´s at the same time intriguing and you get an instant feeling that you should watch it. I haven´t yet seen the film "The nature of Nicholas", which also looks somewhat strange, but since it´s the same director I will probably have to watch them both now.

Re: Mud (Кал) (1997)

I´ve just watched this short Bulgarian film. The first thing you think of is the "filter" that is used with the camera, making it a bit surrealistic, and in this film I like that a lot. Otherwise I found the story a bit strange, with the boy trying to help his victim by his own. But I guess the message here is that even children who are living in these bad conditions, like in the street, still are children, act like children and think like children. No matter what harsch circumstances you have to deal with. You sometimes say that some children are forced to grow up quickly, meaning that they aren´t allowed to have a fun childhood where they can play and that they early in life have to take the same responsibilities like adults, like supporting themselves, find food and so on. But, in this film you can see that some children don´t actually "grow up" more quickly than other children. They are just deprived of their right to be happy children.

Re: Finding Neverland

I had never before heard about the "Peter Pan-syndrome", and therefore found this post rather fascinating, especially after I had time to really read it through properly and also watch the trailer to the movie "Finding Neverland". The "Peter Pan-syndrome" seems to be a kind of resistance to the grown up world with all its demands, seriousness and its lack of open mindedness and fantasy that characterizes childhood and young people in general. This post highlights in the quotations, among other things, the prejudices of society to grown ups that still want to be a part of that time, and never really grow up. And what society won´t understand it seldom accepts. I´m not sure if I myself have the "Peter Pan-syndrome", I don´t think so at least. However, I often feel less grown up than some of my friends and colleagues; so deep inside my mind perhaps I´m also longing for a battle with Captain Hook!

Re: Mud (Кал) (1997)

Здравствуйте Skykid! It´s also very different from other coming of age films based on the subject of troubled teenagers, in the way that there is never any release, no light in the tunnel. I don´t like films with happy endings that much, even if it feels good sometimes. But when watching this one, I hoped all the time for something good to happen, anything.
Well, what can I say, the film had my eyes fixed on the screen like a horror movie most of the time. The acting is outstanding, the boy is unbelievable.
You´ll see this film for the story and the acting, but not for the cinematography, which I didn´t think so much of.
This is a frightening and also sad coming of age film, and very recommendable.

Re: Zucht

This was a rather sweat and enjoyable Dutch short film. For being so short it sure did cover the subject of "coming of age" more deeply and more sincere than many other films made on the similar theme. It´s surprisingly well done, not least cinematographically. And the cast is also well picked for this film. Especially since there´s not much of a dialogue you have to be rather talented to make a film like this running, and it´s also realistically done, almost with a documentary touch.
This is one of the best films I´ve seen on the particular subject of adolescent boys´awakening search for love. And I would recommend it to anyone intersted in the "coming of age"-genre.

Re: The Boys of St. Vincent

I thought the first part of the film was better acted and more interesting to watch, since the second part was too predictable.

Re: The Boys of St. Vincent

I watched this film some years ago and found it equally disturbing as in the review above, but with very talented actors, not least those playing the main characters, and a story dealing with such sensible subjects like here, this is one of the rare films that you´ll remember for a long time after you´ve watched it.

Re: Chernila dlya pyatogo klassa

Nice youtube-clips!
