I was just at an event for women in business, and they said having a mentor was a great differentiator for women succeeding as well.  So the crux of the story is that having a mentor is very good.  To get insight and direction early in your career is invaluable.  I had several good mentors who were able to steer and advise where, on my own, there was no way I'd have that available to me.
