That's what ALL city collectors do if you don't pay. I don't get this. (Sounds like a Seinfield episode!)

funkeymonkey, I haven't been reading too much blogging today, but got your message. I read yours and the other 2007 post. This is unbelieveable! $3.8 mil in unpaid taxes and this elderly attorney didn't want to press the city about collecting ????? Somethings fishy. Who is the city covering up for on unpaid taxes????? Yes. We definately need to pursue this. Now I'm beginning to wonder if our ballooning water and sewer fees are to "cover this loss" of whoever their covering up for. Me tinks a city investigation from the atty gen is in order.

Re: Fewer likely to play Gloucester school sports as user fees go higher

funkeymonkey......I'll write more about this after it "gels". The potholes get filled up with sand from the winter, then re-appear in the summer after the sand gets washed or wind-blown out. I wrote a letter to the mayor last year about it after I came around the corner in my car and fell into a huge sink-hole! The street sweeper had been around, but not the hottopper. If they're going to sweep the streets, then they need to fill back in the holes with the hottopper that the streetsweeper sweeps out!

Re: Three motorcyclists hurt after sliding on gravel

They need to do like Verizon and other utility companies and give all the DPW workers either a GPS or a palm-pilot that makes them show for every hour they are on the job and what they did on that job. I agree with both Nick and Cowgirlshirl and here's why. First of all....it takes a very special person to put their life in jepordy for such things as fighting crime (dodging bullits) and fighting fires (risk of their own life). Most jobs do not have those requirements. Policemen, prison guards, and firefighters are among the most risky jobs a person can do. Even if they are not always successful. There are a lot of other risky jobs, too many to mention as well....but oh well....I'll mention one. For instance, the man who died last week that was diving for underwater welding for the LNG terminal. That is a very risky job as well. I just think the police and firefighters want to know that they are appreciated, and a "commendation" is a very nice way to do that. It doesn't cost anything. I can also understand cowgirshirls stance that "when you sign up to do a job, why do you have to always be recognized for doing it?" So....in my opinion....you are both right.

Re: Union wants firefighters commended

Sorry.....I got the names backwards about the above post. It is too big a figure to just "let go of". I'm not so sure it could be from "unrecoverable taxes from someone passing away" though. I believe that when you die, if you haven't made a will or the property goes into trust or probate, ALL debts get settled. (UNLESS those probated debts never got transferred from perhaps crooked lawyers????) It's my understandand that "Probate" is supposed to settle all debts....and who handles probate debts? Lawyers. If the house goes into a "trust", which a lot of houses on Cape Ann are in, I believe the family trust still gets a bill for taxes and is required to pay them as well. I'd be more suspicious of the lawyers handeling probates. As far as the "friends and family" scenario goes....who knows? There may be some or A LOT of that going on. The GDT printed an article a month or so ago that said an outside audit company "found no fraud". I'm not sure I believe that myself, as I had a huge problem when paying my water bill, that would never get posted because they said "no one knew how to work the new computer system" BS. So who and what do you believe? All I know is I think someones head should be rolling. Or many heads.

Re: Letter: Let's return to the basics

And what about next school year? I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop on this. I just hope the families of these teens are supporting them and their babies financially. My husband was a sargeant for the essex co. prison and it isn't a piece of cake dealing with criminals, bullits or fire. Just chalk it up to "some people just don't understand the job these people have chosen to do" and therefore make blanket statements about anyone who they think is trying to get "something for nothing". I am more concerned with teens who purposely got pregnant and are planning to "live out their days on welfare". Yes, agreed the unions are a little to money grabbing when trying to negotiate contracts, given this poor economic day in time, but the actual people themselves do a great job, and all the while putting their lives on the line. I personally have no qualm about commendations.....even tho not sucessfull, they did do their best. The problem is "one bad apple spoiled the barrel", when the captain sang "let it burn, let it burn, let it burn, to the tune of frosty the snowman. I'm sure he aggrevated all his men who DID try to save the apartment.

Re: Never thought much of that ...

Thea, I'll comment on Baird's "oil" comment. It shows how Long Beach transformed from a once huge naval base into a thriving tourist community by making the waterfront changes there. You can make up your own minds about it. I personally love it whenever I go home for a visit.

Re: Never thought much of that ...

Thea, Long Beach and Venice Beach are in 2 totally different worlds. Long Beach is "old money", retired naval, very tourist friendly in a "grown-up" atmosphere, where they also have the Long Beach Grand Prix every April. THAT IS AWESOME. They turn many streets around the whole downtown area, near the waterfront & convention center, into a speed way. It takes them 2 months to set it up every year. It's a huge 4 day event. Downtown "Pine Street", has been turned into a very toney, upscale, arty, outdoor restaurant and music venue, with outdoor cafe's all up and down the street, which goes on every night. Many good music, blues, jazz clubs all over downtown. Adjacent to downtown along the waterfront, is Seaport Marina Village. If you ever go back to Long Beach, make sure you go there for a stroll through the village, and stop for a bite to eat at Parkers Lighthouse, which has a very beautiful ocean view and really great seafood.

Venice beach is where all the "freaky" people go. Arnold Swartzenager used to work out in his youth on "muscle beach" part of Venice. A lot of "hollywood weirdos" and wannabe actors & actresses hang out there too. Don't get me wrong, it's a lot of fun going there, although I wouldn't want to live there. It's fun to walk up and down the boardwalk in Venice though. There are a million little beach shack shops to stop in and someones always putting on a show on the boardwalk. One time a guy was juggleing a washing machine on his head !!!!! Like I said....very freaky people there, but a lot of fun.

Re: Never thought much of that ...

Ben's carries Benjeman Moore paint, which is the best you can buy.
