Thanks s is basic Christian doctrine.

Re: It's Settled: Dishwashers Beat the Lowly Hand, Almost Every Time

If you are a germophobe put in a commercial dishwasher; 180+ degrees water, hot enough to cause second degree burns. Otherwise just hand wash, air dry and realize that the greater part of hygiene of washing your hands very well after using the bathroom and before preparing food, keeping raw meat from contaminating other food, being careful of drinking water straight from nature, being careful where you buy or how you fertilize your salad greens will for the most part keep you safe. Oh, and don't use hot springs unless you have been vaccinated for meningitis.

Re: I Am A Katharine

You Are a Marilyn!

mm.marilyn_.jpg

You are a Marilyn -- "I am affectionate and skeptical."

Marilyns are responsible, trustworthy, and value loyalty to family, friends, groups, and causes. That how I think of it now. I am creating order and beauty out of chaos, like God on the first day of creation. And of course the first fiat is "Let there be Light!"
On other matters, when Mark said 'the thing with you Alison is that you don't seem to need anybody.. or want anything...' he was projecting his own desires about how he wants to be onto you, because he can't or won't recognize them. That is what is really going on when someone makes a 'you' statement about your character. They are really telling you about themselves.
Hope Finley feels better soon and many years to your dad.
Linda

Re: Letter To the Editor

Somebody please tell the ignorant Liz that President Kennedy's wife was trying to assist a Secret Service agent into the car as the driver' was accelerating to speed away.
Linda

Re: http://brocantehome.typepad.com/brocante_home/2008/11/the-practical-g.html

Jennicakes,
Are you thinking of the same naughty caption as I am thinking? I'm a tool kind of gal and when I got married I declared my new domicile lacking in sufficient cutlery and I demanded the good stuff, full tang, drop hand forged and all that. So for the first couple years, Christmas, Valentines, birthday and anniversary hubby presented me with a quality addition to the knife block. And since he hunted and cut, hauled and split our firewood (we acquired a wood heater) I bought him the attendant paraphernalia: hide skinner, chain saw sharpener, splitting axe, logger's cant hook and such. All at the same hardware store from which hubby was buying my knives. One time I went in for yet another purchase of some ironmongery and the owner who had rung up all these purchases finally couldn't contain himself any longer and asked me, "Just what kind of relationship do you two have?"

Re: The Hor D'Ouvres Tree

I got news for you. In the US the utility companies have bowed to the threat of liability lawsuits and installed meters that send the information back to the company or to a vehicle mounted receiver so at the most they just have to drive down your street. They never come onto your property anymore unless you actually call them to look at something. Even the postal setup has changed to a big box like an apartment mailbox at the end of the street for the whole block. A little more distancing in human relationships, I guess. Sad.
Linda

Re: Rough House Rosie

So sorry about your injuries, Alison. Hope you heal quickly. Lavender oil, applied neat is very good for quick skin repair.
You let him know where you live? I would have told the cabbie to take off to parts unknown and called another.
The "where about's" thing tags your date as a Midwesterner, maybe Minnesota not a New Yorker. Southerners and Texans (not the same thing) drawl. It was Victorians that gave us the idea that fairies were sweet and innocent and fairy tales were stories to read to children at bedtime. They never were. Jacob and Wilhem collected folk tales and even those ones they recorded they Christianized a great deal. They are really the memories of the times of the old gods and forces of creation not tamed or conquered and when the people knew that dark and hungry forces lurked in the uncivilized forests of the human psyche. Those stories asked and attempted to answer questions about the human soul and the nature of human relationships. They were what we had before the shrinks moved in to claim the territory. Read them to Finley anyway. They teach that honor, courage, love, generosity, courtesy, gentleness, patience and steadfastness are always rewarded in the end even though much suffering must be endured in the meantime. I think children realize the world is full of dark and dangerous forests long before we want to admit to ourselves that they do.

Re: Trolley Treats

We live in Montana and my husband and son hunt. generally bring in an elk, or or two antelope and four whitetail deer. Elk are a close relative of the British red deer. Even their bugling during rut sounds the same. We require 3 freezers for the meat and the seasonal produce I put up. Some we get from the weekly in the summer farmer's market, organic but non local fruit, like peaches, pears and nectarines, that comes in seasonally in the local food co-op of which I have a lifetime membership. I also get some organic staples like cornmeal and flour and corn grits (for polenta), nuts, milk powder, spices and full leaf teas, rice and beans of many varieties, local honey, etc all in bulk. I get 5 cents for every container and fabric bag I use. I grow my own herbs outdoors during summer and I have a small hydroponic indoor herb for winter. A local wheat farm provides wheat, rye, buckwheat and oats in groat form in bulk and I have hand grain flaker and an electric mill so I can make all my own whole grain cereals and flours. The farm also provides unbleached white flour in bulk-50 lb bags. Other staples like olive oil and additional canned tomatoes, paper goods, etc we buy at Costco and split with my daughter's household. So shopping expeditions are well planned and discussed with much checking of pantry and the short list we keep on the fridge. Shopping this way however requires large amounts of storage space, male muscles to schlep it all into the house or in from the field and a lots of time and energy invested into cooking or preserving it all.
