The Mayor didn't take credit, the City Council as a whole, well almost as a whole take credit for making it happen the easiest possible method. I am sure the golf course staff, like many of the other golf courses planned on all the dismal weather, yea right. The building sets vacant because of the economy and the delay in startup businesses. I don't know how you can blame the city for that vacancy or the Cavanaugh situation but you will grasp at any straws. The Cavanaughs don't blame the city, why should you? Yes, taking care of what is here and now is important, but the City, nor you, can demand the owners of those properties in downtown or anywhere else, fill them or else. I for one am happy to see the downtown park, the improvement on the city hall plaza, the One Main building and soon the improvements on the Division street section. Our fair city will see many people taking another look, in a positive manner, to locating in Auburn.

Re: City making series of 'blunders' - Auburn Reporter

Hey Jim, you forgot to mention all the other blunders that have gone on. What about the blunder like taking down tavern row and getting rid of the drug and drunks on that strip? Yea, this blunder caused a new very attractive office building to be erected, terrible. What about the blunder of approving of the cancer care center for the Auburn Regional Medical Center and lets not forget the parking garage adjacent to that new business. Man is this going to cause big problems. Oh, and wait, what a blunder, loaning the golf course interest bearing funds to keep going and help survive the weather issues. We don't need a golf course, do we?? Oh and the blunder the City Council made approving the addition of the La Quinta hotel to be built in town, even though one Council member tried to scuttle that development. What a stupid blunder having a park in downtown, man that has to be the silliest idea ever. I am sure people don't want to go to a park anyway.
The Cavanaugh property won't be developed, I believe, until the sewer and water and electrical lines are up to code on Division Street. The Cavanaugh property is a prime location for a downtown business or development, so the promenade is a good thing for downtown and the community for its future growth. The upgrades have to be done anyway, but I suppose that is another potential blunder. This total picture also provides the city a block next to the park to be sold to a developer.

Re: Silence is not always golden - Auburn Reporter

Great question boots. This is the next step to cleaning up our fair city and bringing more for the citizens. Today was the dedication of the new City Hall Plaza and downtown city park. Next project will be the Division Street improvement, which will open the doors for more retail development. I do need to correct my starting statement. The City Council was there, except Virginia, where once again, she was not available to support the improvements of the City. Several downtown businesses have had ribbon cuttings in the past month and the only one I saw her at was at Oddfellas and she was sitting in the bar. If she is so concerned about the businesses in Auburn then why isn't she out supporting those businesses? I support my City Council members in many things but absenteeism isn't one of them. If someone tells me as a business owner in town that she supports my and hopes business improves and she will do whatever she can to help and then doesn't show up for that support, that person's credibility is really in question.

Re: Auburn subcommittee moves to censure Council's Haugen - Auburn Reporter

It appears you may not know the real value of what an Executive Session by an administrative body is supposed to be for. A motion to go in to executive session is my majority vote. The mayor cannot do that alone, the council has to agree. Many times disciplinary action is discussed in this private method so as not to air the laundry of the organization.Other matters that need to be hammered out can be discussed in this form. Then the results or action of that session must be presented to the full body. All minutes of the executive session must be read and acted upon in the executive session. Anyone violating that confidentiality, must be disciplined. Thus back to the main topic of one council member just can't abide by the code she was elected under and swore an oath to.

Re: Auburn sues Walmart for breaking deal - Auburn Reporter

I respect your right to voice your opinion and I protect your right to do so, however, if you read the article and did a bit of research, you will see the City did in fact attempt to work out a deal with Walmart. The store's hierarchy chose to ignore and bend those discussions to fit their timeline, not the contract or the city's request. I would hate to see this store go away, but also believe they need to either do something proper with the old store or give it to the city to do what they wish. Thank you once again for the dialogue.

Re: Auburn subcommittee moves to censure Council's Haugen - Auburn Reporter

So it sounds like to me Haugen tells you all about what goes on in Executive sessions for you to know there are shady dealings and "many deals". Enter in to a contract and just choose not to honor it and the city council should just say, oh well. Get real Carri. Yes, the tax base is large and many of our citizens are using the store, but putting our head in the sand and ignoring a contract breach is not good for the city either.

Re: Auburn subcommittee moves to censure Council's Haugen - Auburn Reporter

So, let me see. Haugen was elected by the community to serve and help run the city as a Council member. Part of that function as a council member is to serve on various committees to bring more economic stability to our city. Haugen refused to attend the assigned committee meetings she was responsible for. If she didn't like those committees, then she should have requested movement. No, she just didn't show up. As a citizen of Auburn, that is not what I want of my council member. I also want a council member to read the material before a council meeting. Too many times, she has voted against the other council members and her statement, on record, is "I didn't have time to read the material". I did not vote for her but supported the decision and gave her the respect a council member deserves, until she lost it based upon her antics. For Auburn's sake and its citizens, I can only hope some rational thought will finally find its way in to her head and she will choose not to run for reelection.

Re: State Rep. Everyone is cutting staff to be able to keep their heads above water and the City of Auburn is no different. No one was promoted. Actually, they were given more responsibility by realigning tasks to help save money. You once again, are trying to spread lies and untruths instead of helping fix the problem. We have one of the finest police departments around, and they didn't have any trouble getting the financials they needed. Unfortunately, those with the union drug their feet and were not willing to help the City with the budget shortfall. If you want to be critical, begin with the state by taking away the sales tax revenue that helped get those roads fixed, sidewalks repaired, etc. Do you have some "inside" information on plush furniture none of the rest of us know about???

Re: Police cast electronic eyes: License plate reader system provides flexibility, efficiency - Auburn Reporter

Thank you Auburn Police Department for continuing to protect and serve the citizens of Auburn.

Re: Let Virginia serve on committees - Auburn Reporter

Oh Pat, you do have your head somewhere it shouldn't be. One place it should be is informed and you don't seem to want to do that. Virginia did not participate in the committees she was assigned to. She can't give a report to the Council on those committees and did not attend thos meetings. Why would the city want to keep someone on a committee who won't pay attention. As one poster mentioned, go watch the city council sessions and you will see she is sitting in her council seat with a vacant mind. Is not prepared and is negative about most all matters. Better yet, go to a council meeting and observe it for yourself like many of us have.

Re: Send-off for Cerino: Councilmember praised for his longtime service - Auburn Reporter

Thank you Gene for your many years of dedication to the City of Auburn and all its citizens.
