Not as cool, but what can you do?

Re: 4 Facebook Tips for Nonprofit Success – See What Others are Doing

Hey. Thanks for the props! Means a heck of a lot.

Wendy is right- giving up control is soooo hard to do. But, some of that has to be given up to make this all work.

I can speak to the brand "reigning in" issue. We had issues with this in the past before we had a real LAF presence in social media. Lots of patchwork done by interns and people with good intentions, but the message was inconsistent. I can tell you that connecting your people to your official page from a traditional source like your website or your np's blog is the best route. If there is a fan of page out there with your name on it, ask them to give up the name. Cant hurt to ask. If you have a trademark and the people are unresponsive or rude, then Facebook may be able to help you get it taken down.

Facebook vanity url: We were approached back before they launched the new site and I believe the vanity url's were to be launched first with 150K and up fans. Not sure where that is now.

I have to admit that I dont do anything with the cause page now that the fan pages are like profiles. We have one fan page and then our official community leaders (LIVESTRONG Army Leaders) that have events and such around the country are members of a closed group that I moderate. They post questions, how to organize events and rallies, what was successful, etc. They have been "tapped" by us to represent us worldwide--not chapters, just official leaders that know the mission, have official info with access to special logos and supported by our staff's grassroots team.

Are there stil 500 LIVESTRONG's on facebook? Yes, but when you do a search and there are 5 members here, 10 there, etc and then one with several hundred, then people will know.

I started doing this for LAF full time in December, but been with the LAF for 5yrs. Get someone dedicated to the mission that is "in the know" on all aspects of your org and invested. Interns dont count-not hating on them, but need someone really invested and someone that can continue to grow your presence.

BTW- I have no idea what Im doing, so Im glad this is working. Hope it helps.
