If calories don't matter start by frying some bacon well done. Remove bacon & crumble. Use oil off of the bacon instead of olive oil. I have even added slices of hotdogs when my children we little. They loved it. In Hawaii they add small pieces of spam.

Re: Food Storage Recipes: Buttermilk Cornbread

Sound good. What has been hard for the last 3 months is lowering my sugar. I have switched to aspertain & it is helping some. I still get cravings for cholocate and ice cream, esp cholocate ice cream. I work full time & my husband is retired. Evening meals tend to be something quick to eat, ecp on my days off. Than I try to make a large meal & put some up in the freezer to take to work. I have not bought anything since this has started & we still have a good supply with lots of choices. I have replaced the water I have used & added more. I found an extra item to store water. I have several camping insulated bottles for any for of liquids. I placed water in these along with all my empty canning jars. Thank for the suggestion. This has shone me what I need to improve on.

Re: The 7 Day Challenge: Day 5 (SUNDAY)

We will do fine. Have 2nd generator as backup. 1 broke during Hugo & had to get a 2nd. My husband had been saying for several years before that we needed a 2nd one & he was right. We have all the necessary equipement to surive in the back yard. The shed out back can even be convertided to a place to sleep out of the weather. I really don't like camping, but would surive. My husband said if the house gets destroyed he would build us a one room cabin within a few days with what is left of the house. He is a retired carpender. He is still expanding our house at this time, along with gardening & taking care of the orchard. He keep busy.

Re: The 7 Day Challenge: Day 4 (SATURDAY)

Just wanted to take a minute to thank you for all your wonderful advice. Your site has given me many new ideas. My order of 10 5gal buckets came in yesterday. I started my food storage without a plan & got a good start, but with your advice I have been able to put order to gathering my food storage. Each month a limit myself to under $100 for that month. Next month I will get the mylar liners, o2 obsorbers & any extra food supplies I can afford on my budget. My husband thinks I'm going overboard but he is loving the taste of the food we have now. He is becoming a diabetic & I think this will be very good for him. Thank again.

Re: The 7 Day Challenge: Day 3 (FRIDAY)

This is great. First day 1 child sick, 2nd day 2 children, 3 day 1 child on the mend another child started getting sick. on fourth day 1 child well, 1 almost well, 1 sick then guess what I get it. next my husband got it. So our household had the 48 hour bug for about 6 days. This challenge reminded me of the events. Only 2 bathroom with atleast 3 people losing fluid both ways. What a nightmare.

Re: The 7 Day Challenge: Day 2 (THURSDAY)

Well here we go again. Good one girls. I'm a reg nurse working in a hosp. So we all have to report for work during a pandemic. We receive annual instruction on what happens during one. All medical staff & majorty of supportive staff have to come. The hosp supplies a cot & 3 meals a day. We work 12 to 16 hour days. They do supply extra uniforms for those who need them, but no undergarments. What would be hard is if you are at work when they declair one. Your 72hr pack is at home & car kit does not have exactly what is in the 72 hour kit. I think I should go through my uniforms & see which I don't need & can pack in my car for this situation. Husband at home is on his own. We have plenty of canned chicken noodle soup, veg soup, cans of chicken to make more soup. We each have a n-95 disposible mask in our 72 hr kits, but if he's at home he won't need it. Plenty of tylenol, motrin, & some advil in 72hr pack. I have access to plenty N-95 mask at work. At home there are acohol gel bottles all around house. Extra TP & paper towels in storage. Already have a years supply of bath soap & some of it is antibacterial.

Re: The 7 Day Challenge: DAY 1 (WEDNESDAY)

Well I learned a lot today. I was not as prepared as I thought. Did not include cat. Tonight I made his 72 pack & placed it in his cat carrier (still looking for his halter & leash). I got my med despenser made, but had not placed it in my bag. Found my milk in husbands bag when I got home. I need more water to put in my car kit. Need 3 more 1 liter water bottles to put on our kits. My tuna can heaters are not made (one have 1 can saved so far). Thank goodness most of our food is not heated. I included more food because people have a tendacy to nibble more during an emergency. I have 2 large trauma bags which include a OB birth kit & burn blanket. I put small pocket kits in our 72hr packs. Each pack has a pint size ziplock with hygeine products. & plent of handwipes & alcohol hand sanitizer which can be also used in the empty vienne sausage can for heaters.
5 day coolers work great to keep food from getting wet. They have very good seals & can even float if not to heavy with food. I have 2 stuffed with food.

Re: The 7 Day Challenge: DAY 1 (WEDNESDAY)

My husband is not particapating. He thinks I have enuff food storage and emergency supplies. I have approx 8 months put back, a little more in some things. But he is the one who makes sure we have all the gas we need. That all the equipement is working well. I does the heavy work for the garden. He does the hunting. The care of the orchard. I think he is particapting in emergency preparedness without relising it.

Re: The 7 Day Challenge: DAY 1 (WEDNESDAY)

I live in the country. We only have a little over 1,000 people in our township. Our meeting place is my work, about 30 minutes away. Where I work is also a disaster shelter for vets in hosp to the south. Also disaster shelter of last resort if the rest of the state is full. We usually get a lot of people from down south during a hurricane. Our parish population doubles or has even tripled during a disaster. Gas & food are the first to disappear. We keep approx 50 gal of gas for the generators, lawn tractors, chain saws, & so I can get to work.

Re: The 7 Day Challenge: DAY 1 (WEDNESDAY)

Got the E-mail about 0640 this morning & was out of the house by 0650. (I had to go to work). Could not find my powdered milk in my 72hr kit, so I could not have my instant breakfast. Had to settled for a snack bar & glass of crystal light. Lucky I took my medication before this started. I had not put my 2nd weekly pill box in my backpack. It's sitting on by bathroom counter all filled up. Only have 2.75 gal water, but also have 1 gal of soda in my car pack. I do have 2 changes of clothes & 1 work uniform sealed in ziplock bags along with 3 sets of underthings. I think having a car pack along with a 72hrs pack in a big help. Much more food to choose from. For my car pack I used a #10can with plastic lid packed with items that will last even in 100 degree weather like we have in Louisiana. Oh no forgot the insect Repellent.

Re: The 7 Day Challenge: DAY 1 (WEDNESDAY)

You state no power. Do you mean no power from electrical company or all power supplies? I have a generator & a backup generator. Also propane bottles & stove.

Re: About Us

I have been watching several vidoes on using mylar bags & large buckets. I need only store for 2 people. I had a thought & did not know if it would work. My husband & I use about 5lb rice, 5lb wheat, & varing amounts of other food. Is it possible to put different items into one bag/bucket if they are individually vacume sealed first then placed in & O2 absorbers placed in mylar bag? That way when I open a bucket it will contain approx 1 month or so of rice, wheat, beans & oats. The remained of the year supply will be in approx 12 buckets. Please let me know what you think of this idea. I have approx 8-9 month so far except for the wheat, rice, oats & beans for approx 4-5months for us. I use a combanation of #10cans & vacume sealing other dry items. If this will work I could buy in bulk from the church & repackage into buckets. If not I will have to get most of my longterm storage in #10 cans. I south Louisiana I will not use a full bucket before it goes bad. Too much humity.
