Not only do they provide training for jobs they provide life skills training as well to help with integration back into society - can counseling, etc. And before I get a barrage of comments about minimum wage restaurant jobs, etc. - this is often a first step along the way for many people.

It's a great program - check it out.

In addition to straight donations, you can support them by eating at the FareStart restaurant, booking catering, attending Guest Chef Nights on Thursdays (which is a great deal for you too) or volunteering. They provide meals to many shelters, daycare centers and nursing homes too. In short - they rock as an organization.

Re: What to feed omni's | HappyHerbivore.com

I usually bring black bean and sweet potato enchiladas. My husband eats vegan for health reasons and hates fake meat so I try to find things that just naturally lend themselves to no meat or dairy. We eat tofu but no processed "meat" products. I also do a casserole with corn tortillas, corn, beans, tomato and avocado. That's always been a hit. I sprinkle pepitas and crushed tortilla chips on top - nobody misses the cheese!

Re: Low income housing proposed for Ballard

They used to have a bunch of single-family homes scattered throughout the city that were designated as low-income housing. However, they sold them off a while back (one of the houses was nearby - it was snapped up and flipped before the market crash). I think that the cost vs. how many people they could help was deemed not worth it. It's a shame though as I think it is better to mix it up as you suggest.

Re: Introducing deals from North Seattle neighborhoods

I tried to put in my email and clicked "sign up" but got

"Oops!

Looks like the page you're looking for has been moved or had its name changed. Not everybody shops at a place like this - I generally don't. But I also don't wish that the owner go into bankruptcy either. Or get my feathers ruffled because a shop is opening that I might not frequent.

Re: Ketch boutique opens on Ballard Ave

Luckily, a lot of people read w/out posting. The Ballard issues sprang from prior issues with feeding programs at that site. I believe that is where the majority of the outrage came from - it was more of the straw that broke the camel's back for the neighborhood even though feeding programs bring more visible problems than a shelter. There is a shelter (still running) just a few blocks away from the Our Redeemers site and it has had minimal issues (it's a working church). Hopefully, the Greenlake site will work out as well. Personally, I still think SHARE should agree to check against the sex offender list (as a neighbor of Our Redeemers that is all I asked for). They are required to do it for some of their sites on the East side so I am still not sure why they won't do it in Seattle. It seems like a small thing that would reduce the majority of the controversy.

Re: Scenes from the first annual BURP

I was bummed that Skillet left early :(

Re: Mr. Gyros expanding to Ballard

I am so excited - I love Mr. Gyros!

Re: Changes proposed for drivers along Market St at 24th Ave NW

What? I had one of those cute counter composters with the holes and the charcoal filters but the fruit flies were outrageous. It's news because people care about it - no matter what you think on the issue it has generated a lot of discussion on this board alone so I think it's def. something people want to know about regardless of their views on the topic. Also, it's a community issue because it's incidents like this that may galvanize people to change current laws - and everyone should be concerned about that.

Re: Swedish singer/songwriter coming to Ballard

uhm, did you listen to the song?

Re: Man burned in camper fire

it happened to me too so I think there's a glitch

Re: Mooberry reopens as Moo Berries

I'm interested to try but I have to say "moo berries" brings to mind what cows leave behind!
