Perfect timing, this question just came up in discussion. AMD had an excuse, but I wonder why Intel sat around not implementing 4.0 sooner. 3.0 was ratified and implemented within around three years, but 4.0 has been out for eight years and still "later this year"...

At least with AMD being aggressive once more Intel can't wait until 2030 to implement PCIe 5.0.

Aye. Current Amazon pricing is $339.99 which is still >2x the 512GB model. Unfortunately the S10 is nearing the end of its life so wild price fluctuations are going to be the norm. The S11 is priced lower across all drive capacities at the moment..

To be honest the SX8200 is priced lowest of all and I'd suggest looking at that particular ADATA drive, it's currently $110 for the 480GB model and the performance is higher than the S10 and S11 both.

I hope street prices are lower because that sure isn't enough to be worth it over the long run. 100TB endurance on the 500GB P1 model... even a TLC drive of the same size can offer 800TB endurance for comparison purposes.

The list of limitations is high, Intel may have trouble establishing a market for these. Won't work with Pentiums or Celerons, and Kaby lake + Optane on 100-series boards is basically a lost cause (minimal support and no ability to boot off it).

I'm personally dubious of re-introducing caching to systems given the prevalence of problems it posed with caching SSDs seven years ago. Time will tell how stable it is this time around. The price of entry is high enough that I would wonder if buying a single flagship class NVMe drive instead of Optane + SATA SSD would still be better.

ASUS did announce a BIOS update to enable Optane support on its 200-series motherboards.

I'm still not comfortable with the idea of RAID, but given it sounds more flexible than a basic RAID setup and it has serious power protection it should be a very reliable drive regardless!
