But, if you give people the tools to act and understand, they can act autonomously but at the same time still be coordinated(!). The image of the human body does say a lot about how this is done in concrete terms, but it does provide a reference point for what human society's I think should strive for--billions of independent cells that form an integrated whole.

Re: I am

Honored that I could be of some inspiration :) And glad to see that you've been writing. Perhaps one of these days I'll be able to stop in and read a bit more so I can learn about what life is like on your side of the earth! But first, I better get the first humble version of ChallengeHunter.com up and running :/

Re: You’re invited to my class this January

Thanks, Max. We're REALLY excited for this as well. If this helps people be more aware of the systems they're a part of, I think it will be quite eye-opening to say the least

Re: the Nature of the Beast II: emergence

Good imagination :) But it will probably feel quite different. I really need to get the dang thing built.......
But I'm glad you made this comment because I actually didn't know about Google Helpout!

Re: the “Thoughts” Category

Hey, Maria. Well, I'm glad you'v enjoyed some of my writing! I'm also terribly sorry I'm not more succinct :)

The most closely related concept to what your talking about is what I'd call "the Paradox of Choice" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wik... where the decision-maker, having a large number of options, can't decide because they can't be sure what's best without trying them all. The outcome is often not choosing at all.

You might have seen this post on my old blog, but here's a related post on the mathematically optimal way to may a choice when having a finite series of options where you can't go back, "How to Choose Who to Marry: a Mathematical Approach": http://kevinvogelsang.com/2...

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask away. Hearing what questions you have is very interesting to me. And I'll answer as I can :)

Take care,
Kevin

Re: 3.1.2013 Learnings: the democratizing effects of monotheism and technology

What I want is a what I'll call a "UI for books" that uses 3 dimensions to convey relationships better. So videos and summaries would be a component, but space would be used to structure the content.
So imagine a "history book" where the left and right dimension is used to represent time, and the depth is used to represent technical depth. You'd essentially have a timeline with a set of summaries and videos. You could then zoom in on topics so that you could get greater depth (a more detailed set of videos) on a particular topic. This is a simple example of a better use of space and structure to convey information and the right amount of information to facilitate exploring a knowledge space, which I think is generalizable to many types of content.

haha, as usual, my timeline for implementing this was way too ambitious....so many interesting things to do....sigh.....

Re: Project Respiration

Hey, Valerie. Thanks for the note. I most certainly will. I also need to find a tool to help me manage licensing/attribution better. At any rate, your image has been taken down.
Best,
Kevin

Re: The Meaning and Purpose of Sex

"without a great struggle to conquer its desires"
I think the key idea that I like from the speech is that it doesn't necessarily need to be a struggle if you use it as a genuine expression of your values (and by this I mean using it as a method to communicate love to someone that represents values that resonate with your own.)
Of course this is not compatible with all views on sex.
