Cool podcast, even though it felt like Sonny w/o Cher! It's interesting in that most of the male friends I've made in the past ten/fifteen years or so have been through work. Other new friends are those that I made jointly with my wife.

I was talking to someone during my recent trip who told me he will wait in line for the next version of the iPhone, even though he bought the previous version 6 months ago! I guess I'm totally out of step with this fanatical devotion to Apple products. But you are right -- at first I was turned off that the iPod I bought a couple of years ago was updated, like, 4 months later. But it's not a white elephant and I can still use it. Hannah, you can stay on my lawn as long as you want! Plus, I'm itching to show the public these amazing tomatoes we're growing.

I'm the contrarian here when it comes to iPhones. Didn't they just "update" the iPhone not too long ago? How is it that you don't feel ripped off that they are constantly updating the phone, making the older phone obsolete and thus inducing you to buy the latest version?

I've been a huge Rick Steves fan for years. I've taken his travel books with on every trip to Europe I've taken since 1998. Yeah, the whole pot thing is funny. He goes to these rallies and sounds somewhat cogent amidst a sea of hippies and "yeah, man!" shout-backs. I haven't yet seen his Iran special, but I really want to!

What is really pathetic is that they think it's 1992-1994 all over again. They are banking on Supreme Leader Limbaugh to help work them into taking over Congress. Unlike what happened back then, there is clearly an effort by the President to try to consensus-build and rise above partisanship.

Happy Birthday! I love your Phil stories, by the way. I turn the big 4-0 in May, and the one big thing I get from reading your entry is that life is pretty f-ing short! We've lived twice as long as when we did when we were in our twenties - and I don't know if it slipped by real fast or "life happens when you're busy making other plans."

I think the Supreme Court in Loving found that the right to marry was a right (as opposed to a lesser-protected privilege) guaranteed by the equal protection clause, rather than ruling that the right to marriage was "constitutional" per se, but it's been a while since I read the opinion. Regardless, I think that blockhead got the jist!

You're having the same jumpy, anxious feelings I had in 2004 - that, to me, was an election in which I had hoped the citizens would've voted "no confidence" to Bush and his alleged war. This one, in comparison, while chock full of issues, seems to have an air of destiny (and thus predictability) behind it.

We had a Yes On 8 bouffant-hairdo'ed lady knock on our door a couple of Saturdays ago. I thought it was a salesperson so I didn't answer it, and my wife Erin was out of the house. She left a flyer at our door. I told Erin about it and she said she would've given the lady a piece of her mind. I must say, however, that while the grass-roots movement of the Yes On 8 people is very strong, polls show it failing right now by a 5 point margin.
