Those bulldozer images are from 2006 and they are not bulldozing bodies, they are clothes. Read the replies on the tweet. The bodies were piled up naturally during the stampede. That's why they died. If they had been bulldozed into piles they would be dirty, but they're not.

I witnessed this crash from a boat headed from Yarina Cocha to San Francisco. The crash occurred near the village of San Juan. The helicopter passed us on the right headed toward Tarapoto, then 2 or 3 minutes later it was spotted off the left side of the boat headed back to the airport. It was in 2 pieces and it was on fire. The cargo block dangled from 2 of its 4 ropes attached to the front half of the chopper. The cabin was spewing flames out the back as it careened slowly below the jungle tree line, followed by a large mushroom cloud of flame and thick black smoke. The thick black smoke continued to billow from the crash site for over 30 minutes.

I don't think the ratio of attrition from php->ruby vs ruby->php is at issue, it's the ratio of novice php->ruby vs all novice->ruby. More developrs, especially recent grads, are picking up Ruby as a first language. We need to do a poll.

Ruby community lacks discipline and somehow PHP is to blame? That's nonsense.

We in the PHP community suffer from the same lack of knowledge and discipline as any other dynamic language. The only reason Ruby thinks it's different is because it's only now having been around long enough to attract a larger representative portion of under skilled developers.

I've worked in 750 KLOC PHP environments and I don't see how blaming the language is going to help keep messes like that from ever happening again.

When you put a 10 lb feature in a 5 lb bag in a 3 lb bag, it doesn't matter what the bag is made of. The problem is not the technology itself, but rather your misuse of the technology.

What the industry really needs right now in both Ruby and PHP is better access to and emphasis on software architecture training and education.

Every person I've ever met with the title of Software Architect who works primarily with PHP has demonstrated a surprisingly poor grasp of the discipline of software architecture.

To me it's the difference between "I want to be able to spend all day riding jet skis with supermodels in my mansion's private lake on a whim" and "I want to feel comfortable spending the day hacking on a side project at the coffee shop without worrying about how I'm going to pay the bills."

It's a pursuit of freedom rather than power; mastery of time rather than mastery of resources. The planet would be a kinder place if more people aspired to this shift in priorities.

I sometimes feel afraid I'll be judged for adjusting my goals. That it might be seen as a form of quitting. I sometimes wonder whether it's worth stating my goals at all knowing that they'll change; the growth in perspective I've gleaned from their pursuit lost amidst the disappointment and lack of honor.
