My pantry is fairly well organized, and my home and yard are nice, neat, and tidy. I was considering going "light" on what passes for my "spring cleaning" (boxing-up old stuff for Goodwill) this year but, you know what? I think I'll do a REAL spring cleaning and spruce things up EXTRA "whitey" (*rolling eyes hard*) after enduring the crap I just read. WTF? If NOT putting ones' family and oneself at risk of typhus, botulism, and hookworm means "white supremacy," sign my ass right up. Holy Mary, Mother of God...

These academic DEI commissars are REALLY reaching. It's interesting. Are there academic institutions that ACTUALLY expect something "productive" (besides ostensibly in some vague institutional "visionary" statement) from the DEI boat achors occupying ergometric office chairs in cushy campus offices (on the rare occasion they AREN'T absent to attend the funeral of some great-god-aunt for the 16th time that semester)? Clearly these academic institutions are doing such DEI hires a cultural disservice by allowing the influence by such WHITE behavior as showing up to work, productivity, and even THOUGHT to corrupt them.

Solutions might involve allowing time off to attend the funerals of anyone or anything, anwhere, anytime. Also helpful might be stocking campus break rooms with unlimited Flamin' Hot Cheetos & an on-duty airbrush manicure repair "artst." Removing barriers to unlimited (and very loud) mobile phone use anywhere on campus, including classrooms, lecture halls, and auditoriums would REALLY reduce the risk of undue "white" influence on DEI Mammy hires, too. Wise colleges and universities are moving in these directions, I would think...

Jesus... the U.S. has deteriorated into a Third World sh!thole. And—actually—comparing the U.S. to Third World countries is an insult to the Third World countries because, unlike the U.S., banana republics didn't have EVERY advantage and resource to p!ss away via mismanagement and corruption...

Fuçk!ng ADP NEEDS to fix whatever is broken. NOW. For such vital and sensitive functions as industry security and payroll, they seem to possess all the robustness and impenetrability of wet toilet paper...!

Why would any business trust such critical elements as their PAYROLL and access/security to ADP with its now unmistakably well-established and constantt pattern of failure and vulnerability?!

A lot of us—people who thought of ourselves as liberal, progressive, "left," Democrats, etc.—have found ourselves "marooned" on what feels like an ever-shrinking island of common sense and reason...

Maybe we're just not "getting with the times," or are "stuck in outmoded thinking," but can you blame us "fuddy-duddy dinosaurs" for wanting to hang on to the core basics many believed liberalism stood for: advocacy for, and solidarity with, those with less wealth, power and agency than those calling the shots; giving us a collective voice...?

I mention jack about gender, "orientation," race, health status, age, background, etc. It's INCLUDED in the above basic belief. No one is saying those specific things aren't important, but—Christ—the ludicrous hyper-intensive focus and vast amounts of energy and time being stupidly fire-hosed at these "critical theory" and "equity issues" is criminally wasteful.

Of course, that's just the opinion of one heretical, ex-communicated "liberal," I guess.

I dunno. Taibbi is being his normal, irreverent (towards those who insist on taking themselves—and their "[insert victim status here] theories"—too seriously) self. He hasn't changed.

And, honestly, cut the man a break. He was, after all, one of the only credible, respectable journalists that lent the left any dignity—rightly calling the mass-hysteria and buffonery of "Russiagate" out for the load of baloney it was from the get-go.

Where I *DO* take issue with Taibbi is in the following assertion he makes:

"From the embrace of oligarchical censorship to the aggressive hawking of 'noble lies' like Russiagate to the constant humbugging of Enlightenment values like due process to the nonstop scolding of peasants unschooled in the latest academic jargon, the political style of the modern Democratic mainstream isn’t just elitist and authoritarian, it’s almost laughably off-putting."

It *IS* knee-slappably, hysterically off-putting.

I feel the same way when I look through my parents' photo albums...leafing through completely different times--like getting into a time machine. I am so afraid for my children's future. You're right about the message that our country is sending to our our kids: you and your future are not worth it.

WHY?

It makes me almost look forward to becoming a "refugee" from this life, too...

If/when you wind up on, say, disability, unemployment or some other program...would you appreciate it if someone came up behind you and questioned/criticized all the choices you made that led up to you being a "freeloader," (<--yes, deliberately "going there") wouldn't you come back with, "You have NO idea WHAT my circumstances are!" ?

I think it applies when you "go there" with the whole "choosing to have another child while already on 'assistance'" thing... *Wink*

Anyway, yeah...I *hear* where you're coming from...but--again--I won't, nor do I (nor would YOU) have to, give any more deference to such obviously loaded/misguided questions.

I don't wish punishment on this kind of person...just a bolt of insight.

I come from what I guess is a solidly middle-class background. I used to be someone who got indignant over what I thought were "takers."

Short anecdote: I worked for years as a bank teller, before AFDC converted over to TANF. I couldn't believe that there were people bringing in MORE money than me (while I was working full-time) on welfare. And some of the welfare recipients would get testy if my bank teller line moved "too slow." Yeah, it annoyed me. How dare they, you know? Here they were...cashing their AFDC checks (which--in some cases--were larger than my overall monthly pay)!

It took me going through a divorce, layoff and several other hurdles to realize: even if you "do everything right" you can STILL wind up--through no fault of your own--between an economic/financial rock and a hard place. And NO ONE cares. In fact, it's pretty much viewed as a major personal flaw/crime to be in need--even temporarily.

Are there people in this country who "take advantage of" or view "safety net" programs as a way of life? I don't know--probably a handful. But it's WAAAAY lower than the "personal responsibility" flag-wavers squeal about. And--*laughing*--our "safety net" programs are weak/inadequate at BEST. NO ONE is living "high on the hog" under the existing programs. (I can say this having lived in Europe for nearly two decades. I *KNOW* what halfway decent social programs look like). Seriously, it would be a full-time job just keeping up with the mountains of paperwork to REMAIN on "welfare" programs like TANF, SNAP, WIC, Medicaid, unemployment, etc.

Anyway, having been on both sides, I now know that the vast majority of families using these kinds of programs are NOT lazy, irresponsible, "entitled-feeling" slackers. The vast majority didn't make "shitty life choices" *rolling eyes* or "make avoidable mistakes." Most of us who struggle work so hard we're utterly exhausted. Most of us "did all the right things," but STILL ended up hurting. I'd say fewer than 1% of us are (somehow) "bumming freeloaders."

If the RBLevy types "got it" just through hearing it from us, we'd be in great shape. Sadly, most of us have to experience some hardship to wrap our heads/hearts around these things.

I'm absolutely clear/honest about what I said. And "real." Just because a "poverty program" recipient like me doesn't use crappy grammar doesn't mean I'm some "fake poster." *Rolling eyes* Christ--I don't blame people for being wary but--hell--my profile is linked...wide open and vulnerable here.

I laid myself bare. Not familiar with the "takers' theory," but--LOL--I'll look it up. Whatever it is, I'm sure the massive Wall Street/corporate tax break and giveaway "takers" would be fascinated by it, too.

I DO NOT feel the LEAST bit guilty, nor do I consider myself a "taker" because my family and I have made use of meager nutrition programs like WIC or SNAP. I *KNOW* we have earned such benefits for my family--AND SO HAVE YOU--so get off the bullshit coaster, folks.

In fact, it would be IRRESPONSIBLE of me to not avail myself of these programs since they're there. This, again, is not to say we feel, somehow, "entitled" to them. It's to say, "These are GOOD programs to have, and we're thankful for them."

If these programs didn't exist, we would work to find other ways to cobble together what we need. Everyone adapts. But since the programs DO exist...yeah, we're not ashamed or apologetic for signing up.

That being said, my husband and I paid taxes for DECADES to help support programs like WIC, just like you. And we'll eventually be back to paying (too high) taxes again at some point, just like you. No one likes taxes, but I like the prospect of winding up without a "safety net" WORSE. I put safety net in quotes because--honestly--what we have here in the U.S. is a joke as far as protecting people from destitution.

Now that my family needs WIC and SNAP--you know what?--we're OVERJOYED they're there, and HELL YES we're using them! The same as I'd immediately apply for and use unemployment if I were laid off! Or SSDI (if I were legitimately disabled), or whatever. I'd do it for YOU (pay taxes/support such programs), no matter what help you needed...no matter what your/your family's circumstances. And I wouldn't begrudge/judge you for it!

I've deliberately avoided the "if you can't afford to feed your existing family, then why are you having another baby?" question. Not even going to dignify that with a response. *Chuckle*

Oh, and if I made a mistake, it was venting about being sad and angry and worried that WIC could be cut off. Kind of goes without saying, but it paints me as a whiner/"sorry-for-selfer." LOL...you've got no idea.

But being grateful for basic GROCERIES?! I should be used to my fellow citizens begrudging a mother's (somehow selfish) relief that her children have nutritious food, but it's still a stunner to me. Just such utter bullshit.

Despite working full-time, my family and I have relied on WIC for many years to supplement our meager food budget. Now we have a baby due on November 4th, and WIC (which provides much-needed formula supplements) will be cut off if this shutdown continues. I can't tell you how large an impact formula expenses are on our budget. Formula alone easily can run over $120 a month. Money we do not have. *Sighing* We were ALWAYS grateful for WIC which provides eggs, milk, cheese, healthy cereals, beans and juices...but now we're going to be up the creek...and there's not a damn thing we can do about it by ourselves. We're beyond sad, frustrated, disgusted and angry. We just can't believe it. God bless America! <--Yeah, right.

There is no justice when it comes to rape in the U.S. armed forces. As a female Air Force vet, I know first-hand. I can tell you nightmarish horror stories I endured
while enlisted. PTSD isn't limited to those on the front lines. This
poor woman. She is incredibly courageous.

Whoa. Look, God forbid something happen to you, Jack. If it did, I would contribute to take care of YOU, if I had the option. How can you be so callous? Hedges explains their situation very well: a combination of health, economics and hopelessness have got these people stuck where they are. The gentlemen (and others, in the depressed region of West Virginia Hedges reported from) are physically, emotionally and spiritually suffering, number one. Number two, they have nothing else to fall back on. And, three, Heizer passed away from an overdose, for God's sake. Yet, the insensitivity from your post... *Shaking head* I am horrified. Is this what we, as a people, have become, feral animals--with little to no humanity? Full of judgement and vitriol? And where does this out-of-left-field stuff about the whole Darwin vs. whatever thing have to do with anything? Look, don't you realize as much as everyone else...(if you're so bent on turning this into some left/right issue, which it ISN'T)...that the state of our being has nothing to do with who is right and wrong about such trivial debates. It's about this: WE ARE ALL SUFFERING, and these folks, in this area of West Virginia, are really the "canaries in the coal mine," so to speak--a microcosm of our nation now, and into the future. This is such as sad, sad story. Please Jack, please try to save and direct your anger towards the things/groups of people that deserve it. If you don't know yet who they are, keep reading on sites like this one. Hang in there, Jack. You're not wrong to be angry, just a little of target at who and what to be angry at. Take care.
