I feel bad that it looks like it might not make it. I wonder what Johnny G could do w/ $1600? (I know that the money doesn't get funded unless the goal is achieved, but I just wonder how far $1600 would go)

Re: Something for the Ladies

I particularly like the "9pm until we have a winner" part - they're really serious about this, they ain't fucking around. Don't be too troubled by the response - like I said, people can't handle *any* critique. Musicians say they want to be taken seriously, but fail to realize that being critiqued is part of being taken seriously. You can't have it both ways, saying "Take me seriously, but don't ever say anything bad."

I think you took your subject seriously and gave it real thought. An artist and their fans should at least be able to respect that. Sadly, most cannot.

Re: Someone else's thoughts on Athens music

Wow, there certainly has been a jump in comments over there since last night.

I still find it hilarious that so many people consider the post to be such a vitriolic "shitstorm" of "negative crap." It's a fairly reasonable musing on the existing "controversy" surrounding Weiss. It even links to a more positive interview with the artist as an opposing viewpoint. It's not the greatest piece of journalism ever written, but it takes its subject seriously and even couches its statements with context (eg, the writer being a 37-yr-old male) and aforementioned links to positive articles.

There's no pleasing the shitheads in Athens, musicians and fans alike. If you want to be coddled, go live with your fucking mothers.

Re: R.I.P. This was very sad news, but it is great to see so many people across the web paying their respects to him. I only knew Jerry peripherally in the 90s, as we shared common friends, but it was still clear that he was a great guy - and of course a phenomenal drummer.

Re: RIP Jon Guthrie

DP is crazy busy, so I'm just helping out by posting this.

Re: New Local Music Video: The Arcs

Thanks for posting! Picked up a quart of BBQ sauce from Fresh Air. Had a great golden bowl w/ broccoli and yeast gravy at the Grit. Had a Transmet Calzone for dinner - somebody needs to tell those guys not to pile all of the ingredients in one spot. Hung out and drank w/ Jay, Jake, etc, etc, etc (and others who felt I wasn't worth mentioning in their MMSOs!). Semi-accosted a stranger outside Flicker who I assumed was Gordon. Turns out that the long-hair-and-beard/unkempt look is not just popular with homeless people and Caledonia doormen. Observed a near-altercation between some Zac Efron wannabe douche and some punk rock wannabe douche out on the Caledonia patio. Used my rapier wit to heckle said altercation. Turned down multiple opportunities to eat empanadas from the empanada cart. Watched Beatles cartoons with Jay.

Sunday: Used the Fresh Air BBQ sauce in a taste test against the wife's and my attempt to make out own vinegar based sauce. Simmered two hunks of pork (pre-packaged 12-oz Trader Joe's carnitas, which are great for the quick homemade BBQ) in separate pots, one with our sauce, the other with Fresh Air's, for about 30 minutes.

Our sauce had a very strong, almost entirely vinegar taste, followed by the kick of the spices. Fresh Air's felt more refined, with no single flavor overpowering. The wife preferred our sauce. Ours was good, but I think Fresh Air won. I would like to refine our sauce ("ours" being mostly based on an online recipe I found) so that the front-end vinegar bite is smoothed out with some other flavor.

Re: Monday Morning Sound-Off

Funny enough, I just tried Stone's Arrogant Bastard Ale for the first time this weekend. It was a nice way to start my Friday night, as I watched the wife and baby play in a tiny plastic pool in the backyard, and got bit by mosquitoes. It was followed by a couple of Oskar Blues' Ten Fidy imperial stouts as we watched "Religulous," which was mostly disappointing. Although I did learn that there's a group of crazy Jewish inventors trying to invent versions of items (like telephones) that adhere to the more "traditional" rules of the Sabbath.

Re: Monday Morning Sound-Off

It was a welcome return to form after the stultifying departure that was Part 6.

Re: Monday Morning Sound-Off

I was wondering when this was going up. I am sometimes conflicted between the two albums, but usually choose DT as my favorite. The beauty is in the rough edges, which are somewhat lacking in the second album. I pretty much creamed my jeans when Bar None quoted me in their press kit for Double Thriller. It's a damn good album.

Re: http://www.thedayjobs.com/2009/05/this-weekend-in-athens_08.html

Yeah, I think we can all agree that the RATs were stellar. He even makes a story about Ross Shapiro boring: http://www.magnetmagazine.c...

Two poorly written memories that certainly don't do Ross justice. If I didn't know Ross or the Glands, I'd think, "Why is this guy recounting these lame stories about how the guy at the record store called him an ass? Oh my god, how insane, an ass! He called him an ass! Wow! Well, yeah, that sounds about right."

There's some okay CVB songs out there, but god this man just needs to be quiet. And Ross deserves a better write-up.

Re: http://www.thedayjobs.com/2009/05/this-and-that.html

Are you related to Dr. Rockzo?

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Re: Monday Morning Sound-Off

This? http://www.youtube.com/watc...

ghosts appear and fade away...

Re: Monday Morning Sound-Off

Lock the door this time
