The US President doesn't have line item veto powers. The Line Item Veto Act of 1996 was struck down in 1998.

Cartels deal in human traffic, which probably leads to child porn or prostitution in a lot of cases.

At any rate there's evidence that legalizing drugs will cut down the cartels' income. Turkey partially legalized opium (for sale to pharmaceutical companies) in 1974 and found that it helped cut illegal fund raising. ( http://www.washingtonpost.c... ) Plus, WHO studies indicate that harsh enforcement of prohibition doesn't lower drug consumption or addiction rates. The US and Britain have among the harshest yet also have the highest consumption rates. The Netherlands, among the most liberal when it comes to drug policy, has the lowest. Being the most popular distribution of Linux meant that RedHat had it's share of worms for years. (6.2 and 7 especially.) It'll be interesting to see what worms show up on Ubuntu as it gains popularity.

It would sure be a shame if the good people of California set their sites on another minority class who has rights they don't like. Eh, I'm sure such a class (like gun owners) have nothing to worry about.

What the court is basically saying is that the government has to be justified in suppressing someone's rights. This is a big constraint on the government's power and conservatives, intellectually honest ones anyway, should be ecstatic at this judicial trend.

There's a lot of downside in attempting to shoot down the missile. The Aegis and Patriot both have a pretty bad track record when it comes to shooting down missiles. An shoot down attempt would would agitate China if it was unsuccessful or not and would be a propaganda boon for NK to one degree or another. Not to mention that we would be advertising just how effective Aegis and Patriot are.

I'm not seeing what the upside would be. What would we gain?

Huh. I'm not sure whether you're a hypocrite or just don't have the spine to stand up for your beliefs. After all, you're OK with embryos being routinely destroyed (as happens with embryos that aren't used after successful IVF treatments) just as long as they aren't used for stem cell research first.

Maybe you just really don't like people with Alzheimer's?

So you want IVF to be outlawed (I think. That sentence is a little hard to parse.) but you're OK with people outside your family doing them? Unless they're gay, that is.

I'm not so sure you should be worried about the country's moral compass.
