I have always thought we were diluting the success of the serious functional potter with all the 'hobby' potters who now enter and get into shows.

I will admit that I studied english while in college and only found clay afterwards - at workshops and community art centers. But without us wanting to learn where would all the 'serious' college educated ceramists teach? There are only so many professorships out there.

I wish that there were a measuring stick to measure good craft. Maybe because craftsmen have been hollering for recognition as artists, that we now see functional work that doesn't function. I think we need to honor the craftsman - acknowledge that he brings beauty in function and separate the folks who just glaze a lump of clay and call it an 'art bowl.' If functional pottery were given the same merit and status as 'art' maybe colleges would honor it as a course of study.

Re: Chicks and Marriage

Happy Anniversary to you guys! It's posted on Connie Norman's blog (http://connienorman.com/blog). It's from an interview with Jeff Campana -- in his words --

My former teacher Tim Mather used to say “the best way to ensure that you never find your style is to go looking for it.” My advice is to try to follow your own aesthetic compass. Stop looking at other artists, stop looking at source material, stop looking at what’s going on in the art world. Just look really hard at your own work, and pay attention to what you, not anyone else, think about it. Be Specific. I don’t have a single image in my studio, and don’t ever look at pots with the intention of getting ideas from them. When you take the other people out of it, then it starts to become your own."

Re: This Week's Poll: Online?

Carter - you make some very valid points and I agree with you -- but I don't think there is a cure for artistic schizophrenia! lol

My discussion with my friends the other day was mostly dealing with new potters. Being able to see all the great work online can be intimidating as well as inspiring. I think we fail to remember - sometimes - that what's posted is an artist's best work. What's not available is the ideas that didn't work, or the glaze disasters, the kiln overfires -- so it can be misleading. We start to not believe in our own ability to reach that level of work.

Some blogs talk about process & that helps keep it real. There's been lots of discussion lately on copying & when it's okay to copy or is it okay to copy. Can you copy and then change it up some & call it your own design? There are so many workshops with artists teaching their techniques -- so many directions to go with clay -- if you have the slightest difficulty in focussing - you can get lost.

I would hate to be in my studio by myself day -in & day - out. I count on the interaction of my potter friends - real & virtual -- & seeing their work - listening to their struggles & triumphs. But sometimes I need to shut it all out & concentrate on my direction - my work.

Re: This Week's Poll: Online?

My Iphone is my music in my studio - & it makes a noise when I get an email -- it's so annoying that I can't ignore it! lol

I was talking with group of potters the other day about the web influence -- while it can be an amazing wealth of information -- it's also too much information. It doesn't just keep us distracted - but it can also keep us from making our own work -- our own style. We now get to see so many pots -- that it's even more difficult to follow your own voice -- it's hard to even hear your own voice with all the distraction.

Re: Tools

okay - I kept waiting for the tool to load -- duh!
