How do you think the United States has changed since 9/11?

I was living downtown when it happened, and as scary as that day was for New Yorkers, the next two weeks were really the hardest. During that fortnight I saw New Yorkers (I won't say 'Americans' as I'd like to keep it more focused on my experience on the ground, at the time) come together and become the most empathetic, generous and loving community you could imagine.

Eight years later and a lot has changed. I'm going to TOTALLY sound like a douche here, but having just returned from a trip back home I felt a bit like at the end of the 'Sex and the City' movie, when all the old hoes noticed the new kids that were trying to fill their old stilettos, doing exactly the same thing as the original cast, but in a way that the originals would always see as second best.

You'll find smiles in New York that you never would've encountered >09/11/2001. The city has changed forever in that regard. But the smiles (and hugs) that reminded you that you were going to make it through the day - the ones that came from the stranger on the corner or the lady in tears on the subway platform looking at the 'missing person' flyer that - by that point - everyone knew wasn't missing but was dead, or the bagel guy or the super or the UPS man or the familiar faces from the dog walking area at the park or the laundromat or the coffee shop (people you'd never spoken to but recognized and actively HUGGED because you knew you both needed it) - those smiles (and hugs) codified a community I'm proud to always be a part of, no matter where I live.

How have I changed? Hard to say. But I AM just starting to become proud of my American-ness for the first time since that day, this day eight years ago.

Re: http://extrafirmhold.tumblr.com/post/167781054

Avatar trailer? Successful stage actors master big and bold for an opinionated audience (i.e. bloggers) whereas successful screen actors need to perfect refinement and nuance for a more mainstream (i.e. journalists). Neither should 'write' the other off because they perform very different functions, and both can learn from the other's storytelling.

I've got some Sydney bloggers I can share with you if you're keen.

Re: JoshOnTheBus - And in the great tradition of Australia Day, that...

Two things, actually - see, I'm an over achiever!

Re: Question: McRib

The McRib is pure deliciousness.
