For actually hard junctions see M40 / M42 at J1A where you need to bear left to drive right and right to drive left or M6 J7 where attempts to get to Birmingham often end up in Stoke or Walsall.

Other people's mileage may vary but I find that generally speaking meeting points are fairly fluid now - an affordance of the mobile phone is that you can choose a more relevant meeting point for the task in hand and make this decision on the fly, communicating latest positions via text, tweets or even (and this really happened on a stag do recently) 4sq checkins.

We've come a long way from choosing the pub in advance and having to stay there until the last person arrived before rolling on to the next joint. I'm amazed pub crawls could happen before 1999.

Great post, Jon. My input as you know was very limited, but like you I got to have a peak behind the curtain to see how things could have run, and I know that we've missed an opportunity. The plans that were being put in place to engage people in producing policy and making someone accountable for it was an incredible prize that the city could have won.

Just last night we were talking at home about local public transport, and what happens next with that. Will old stations be reopened? Metros extended? A mayor would have had the opportunity to spell out an achievable goal for transportation, based on what the city wanted, and would have been accountable to deliver it. The leader of the council by comparison has got their job based on having the most colleagues elected on a platform of getting the recycling done and the potholes filled (things which happen anyway, by and large). The level of disconnection between individual roads / wards and the needs of the city is immense - for all the less trivial reasons you've outlined above as well as my example of transport.

Don't really know how to end this except to say - it's just a real fucking shame.

Funnily enough when you writing this the other day, I was tweeting about an old ning. We set it up as a silly joke (fermented in the Hare of the Dog, which as you know is where the best Internet gags come from). As it's due to close I took a look. And there are spammy accounts and bots chatting to one another. Lovely.

I take the main account as being spam (network professional? making millions over night? yada yada. There may be some direct human agency, but that doesn't make it genuine) and the identical twins at the bottom certainly are.

I assume this post is fermented in the bot updates you've been doing for rhubarb, post Twitter changing OAuth?
