The Phillies were able to get Cliffy without providing any top-tier prospects and Jake Westbrook and Austin Kearns were given away for practically nothing.

Re: Looking for a Job? I'm hoping they make favorites a competitor to Facebook "likes".

Re: Protected: The Y Combinator Experience

Very interesting post, especially on the eve of the application deadline to S10!

When you applied, DailyBooth had already launched. How was your experience in YC different than the other startups in the class, who may not have been public or been as far along as you? Do you feel that having the site out there beforehand was an advantage during the application process?

Re: BIG: The Daily Show and Colbert to Be Yanked From Hulu

This is where a decentralized streaming app like Boxee shines. Colbert and Daily Show can still be streamed from Comedy Central's website, so Boxee users won't even notice a change.

Re: The new worldwide startup

I would say that Chicago is starting to get their act together. Excelerate, a YC-style incubator, is opening up for the summer with great mentors like David Cohen (TechStars) and Chuck Templeton (OpenTable). There is also lightbank, a new venture fund started by the Groupon guys and focused on consumer web tech.

This video from Chicago Business is a great recap: http://www.chicagobusiness....

Re: Let's put the "fun" in funding

Civic Innovation Lab is very useful in Cleveland, but it isn't focused solely on tech/startups and is not a very transparent process. In addition, I think it might be a bit too _much_ money per applicant.... I'd rather see $5K investments in a bunch of ideas than a few investments at $15-30K.

A model that I think would work great is something like ScaleWell (http://scalewell.com). ScaleWell provides a $1,000 grant to early stage companies with no strings attached. They're Chicago-based, but they don't limit themselves to Chicagoland; applications are considered from all over the place.

~$1K is a perfect amount, as it is just enough to gain a bit of traction/validation, implement the idea, and work towards product fit. The only real expenses startups face are $50 a month for a slicehost box, and then various project management apps such as basecamp / github / etc.

I doubt that we have spent more than $1000 for CorkShare, excluding living costs, and we're about ready to launch.

I think this style of microfunding, coupled with a transparent, open selection process, could be really helpful in growing the tech startup scene in Cleveland.

Re: Behold: The new Facebook homepage

I am not so sure. Facebook has learned a thing or two about rolling out new features since Beacon and the news feed, explaining the features clearly and previewing any updates before they happen.

90% of Facebook users don't use Twitter or FriendFeed, so they won't be "insulted" by Facebook mimicking the features of these social media sites. Live update stream and information grouping will be a brand new thing for most people. I expect this to change the battle over the social graph significantly in the future, and will significantly affect the plans of both Twitter and FriendFeed.

Re: Yuil is dead! 4hoursearch is now online.

Hey the pagination seems to not be working. It forgets the query string and doesn't have a page as a parameter.

Other than that, good work!
