Your post has been sticking in my head for a few days now ;) Thanks for your honesty. I think we all struggle with that inner critic every day, but we tend to forget that everyone else has their own one too. (Well now that's a muddled sentence!) Your blog is a constant source of inspiration to me, but even more so after this post. It's encouraging to know that we're not the only ones with this struggle and that yes, the only thing to do sometimes is to hit 'Publish'. Or 'Print' or 'Call' or whatever other action is needed!

Thanks for articulating something that I was struggling to think about. I still don't have any answers, but I'm working on it!

I struggle with the idea of charging for classes/tutorials because I do think that most of what I know is stuff that people could find out for themselves (as I did) - I'm just applying it to a particular project or collecting it in an easy-to-find format. And of course I wouldn't have been able to find out anything if the information hadn't been available for free online in the first place; it seems important to continue and contribute to that free flow of information.

Perhaps another way to look at things being too "African" in the way you describe would be to see them as kitsch. Often people try to make things that they assume their customers will want, and these are not things that they themselves like. Perhaps they could start trying to make things that they themselves would buy, and work from their own personal taste.
