I stayed standing, half paying attention to him and half paying attention to my smart phone.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Then my son made baby sign language sign for "spider." He repeated: "Baby! Baby!"&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Finally I put my phone away and stooped to his level.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The sidewalk was swarming with ants. My son called them "baby" because he didn't have enough words to explain what he had found on the ground. But he knew what the spider looks like. And he knew how to say "baby."&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;He wanted to tell me something and I almost missed the whole message. I'm glad I finally got it.
