This is a great excerpt. In some ways, I also find how people who say "this book will ruin your practice" squares with saying "there are many different ways to be a witch." I mean, I've seen a number of people that express both ideas.

Re: Who Put the Odal Rune on the CPAC Stage?

The evangelical right might be for a strong Israel, but only to fulfill their own end times prophecy. At which point most of them believe the Jews will be condemned to hell for not accepting Jesus. So even “pro-Israel” evangelicals tend to be pretty antisemitic once you scratch the surface.

Re: Everyone Loves A Repeat Offender

Eh, it's her call. I'd totally support her if she had decided to press charges. But I also understand that there are potential costs in terms of time and mental anguish in doing so. Sadly, we live in a world where people need to do a cost-benefit analysis about these kinds of things.

Re: Why You Should Care About Theological Debates

Just read Astrea’s post. Personally, baby witches excite me. It brings to mind someone who just came into the world of witchcraft. Everything is new to them and they are filled with wonder as they begin to explore and make their own way. What will they discover? What will they figure out? How will they do things? What kind of witch will they become?

I agree with your points, which is why I’d never use the term that way.

Re: Fannie's Room: America: The Broken, 2020 Edition

Thanks, Fannie. That and the attempt to buy groceries to last a long time when many of the shelves in the grocery store are still mostly bare.

Of course, the end of this month and next month will add a new challenge: trying to figure out how to furnish and start maintenance work on a new home with everything still closed. I mean, it's still better than being sick, so I guess I can't complain too much. But still.

Re: A Modern Pagan Guide to Cursing

This is one of the best posts on the topics I've read. This morning, the site director sent out an email stating that we should continue working from home except for days when we must work int he lab/with the equipment for the next two weeks, at which point they will reassess.

I will note that my employer's IT infrastructure is getting a real stress test right now with all the VPN connections and online meetings over Microsoft Teams. Of those left, I feel like she's the best choice. Before Castro, Booker, and Harris all dropped out, I felt like it was going to be a hard choice. It's a shame some of my definite no-ways didn't drop out instead. I think I would've preferred to face a hard choice over the current field.

I will admit that I'm a little sad I don't have another opportunity to vote for Hillary, but completely respect why she probably didn't want to put herself through the nightmare of running again.

Re: Fannie's Room: Thoughts on Atwood's The Testaments

Clearly, I need to read both of these books ASAP.

This part of your post really jumped out at me.

"Cut off from wider knowledge and other cultures, that was their normal. They had no other ways of living to compare their own to."

This describes certain segments of white evangelicalism with frightening accuracy. They like to cut their followers off from even knowing that outside viewpoints exist or, failing that, condition them to believe that those outside viewpoints are evil and dangerous and will lead to ruin if followed. For some women, this is already reality. Or pretty damn close.

Re: Fannie's Room: Quote of the Day: "We Knew This Already"

"I thought he'd tone it down once he became president." -- My mother, when I pointed out we always knew he was terrible. I come from a deeply conservative Christian family, and one of the things I struggle with is that I don't really know where I stand with any of them. My parents have welcomed Joe (my husband) into their home. They treat him well. They acknowledge him as my husband. They sent him the PERFECT birthday card earlier this month. They always send us holiday and anniversary cards. So on the surface, they seem very accepting at this point. But that doesn't stop me from wondering what they might be secretly thinking. (And I know at least my mother voted for Trump, so there's that giant mess.)

I'm even more uncertain about my extended family (over even my sister and her husband), who I see less regularly and have had the most superficial and polite conversations with. The only exception is the husband of one cousin who pointedly ignored Joe and I at the last family gathering (to the point where he spoke to the person I was talking to and didn't so much as glance my way) and the husband of another cousin, who has actually taken the time and effort to apologize to me and work to rebuild bridges.

Anyway, I guess this is my long way of saying I completely relate to what you're saying here.

Re: Fannie's Room: On the Death of Internet Feminism Being Greatly Exaggerated

Thank you so much!

Re: Fannie's Room: On the Death of Internet Feminism Being Greatly Exaggerated

I work on embedded systems in an industry that is slow to change for both cost and safety reasons.
