One with a 40mm prime and another with a short zoom. Very much like their GA medium format autofocus film cameras. The hybrid viewfinder should work well on these. They shouldn't have to commit a lot of resources for that and they would not set the expectations for a full range of new lenses.

Re: In the Details: Too Few Buttons

I am fairly sure this was intentional on the part of the designers to make people update the OS more frequently. Unfortunately, the end result is that it becomes very annoying since it invariably comes up when you are in the middle of work. I didn't know you could dismiss it so I always ended up opening the App Store app and then dismiss it.

Re: Nikkor 32mm f/1.2 announced – the fastest lens for Nikon 1 mirrorless cameras

Agree with nick192

Re: [Editorial] Can Sony’s Digital Imaging Division Restore Profits?

Sony has done well with their compact camera sales over the years. I don't have numbers but I'd imagine, they are behind Canon and Panasonic but probably ahead of Nikon and others. With DSLRs, they might have done better if they had kept the Minolta branding. DSLR market tends to be loyal to the established brands. Sony is doing the right thing by innovating with the SLT technology. That is the best way to differentiate their products from Canon and Nikon. Sony has a great chance right now to take away sales from Canon which has been struggling for the last few years to come up with innovative products.

Sony's problems in the DSLR market are: Lack of a more complete range of lenses. This usually takes time to build but Sony needs to be agressive here. In-body stabilization of their DSLRs can be a big advantage here.

Their second problem is marketing: People need to see more and more photographers with Sony cameras. They also need to appeal to young professionals who may not have very strong associations to Canon and Nikon and are willing to try Sony.

They can be a significant player in the cellphone market too, I think. Traditionally, their weakness has been the software. With Android and Windows 7.5, that is no longer a problem. For years, I used Nokia and Sony phones and always had a soft spot for Sony handsets.

Re: In The Cloud We Trust

I suppose a good thing is that you have your online presence spread over Tumblr, Delicious, and MobileMe. Unlikely, that all of them would go down. But it seems prudent to have a back up somewhere.

Re: EOSHD.com - Why Thom Hogan and Barry Green are wrong about DSLR video

You know, I think the optical viewfinder will also have a place in the future. The immediacy you get while looking through a glass finder cannot be matched with any EVF. Having said that, I think an EVF is better than most of the tiny peep holes that go for OVF on consumer DSLRs. I think, high end DSLRs (basically 7D and D300/s for APSC and all full frame DSLRS) will retain their optical viewfinders for a foreseeable future. Video will continue to get better in this line of prosumer and professional still cameras but the emphasis will remain on still photography with many improvements in dynamic range, sensor technology other than Bayer, high ISO performance, In body and Optical stabilization, and of course resolution.

What will happen however, is that the bottom and the mid portion of the market (Rebels through the XXD for Canon, and DXXXX through DXX for Nikon) will slowly start shrinking as mirrorless cameras come to dominate. By the way, you could easily make a mirrorless camera with an optical viewfinder as long as the lens is fixed or as long as viewfinder is part of the lens module. So there is a lot of room to innovate even within the mirrorless format. Also, mirrorless design doesn't preclude a full frame sensor camera, just see the Leica M9. You can design a mirrorless full frame camera and still retain a lot of the advantages of the basic design such as small and lighter lenses as well as bodies, 100% accurate EVFs, no mirror blackout, etc.

As mirrorless cameras capture more of the prosumer compact and the low end DSLR market, camera manufacturers will lose the economies of scale they enjoy today with low end DSLRs. As a direct result, we'll also see fewer new lenses specifically designed for APCS DSLRs.

At the same time, high-end DSLRs will come to occupy the space that medium format cameras had in the film days. I would want to stay away from buying another APSC consumer DSLR today if I was concerned about future-proofing my purchase :-)

Re: EOSHD.com - Why Thom Hogan and Barry Green are wrong about DSLR video

Great analysis! I also think that these new video cameras from Sony and Panasonic will not do as well as they probably expect. I do think however, that eventually these new lines of products will get lots of pro video features and video optimized lenses to justify their price premium. In time, they will replace the pro line of camcorders from all manufacturers. A large number of users will still want something like the GH-1 though - a very fine still camera that is also a good replacement for a consumer camcorder. In couple of years, Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus, Pentax (?) will all have to have cameras that can compete with the likes of GH-1 and G2 to stay competitive irrespective of whether they develop a pro line of video cameras or not.

Re: EOSHD.com - Nikon finally 'doing a GH1'

It is great to see Nikon talk about this new model/s. I too hope they can find a way to support autofocusing on their current lineup of lenses. I think the constraint Nikon faces is that they don't make their own sensors. If they want to come out with two different sized sensors then they almost certainly have to rely on Sony for that. However, Nikon can be a very strong competitor in this segment if they can make this new camera compatible with their current lenses since a lot of photographers have Nikon lenses and DSLRs. 2010 is surely shaping to be an interesting year so far.

Re: Dummy Data

So very true. I have witnessed this in every customer review I have been part of. You're likely to get skewed feedback on your design if the data is bogus. It always pays to sit with a subject expert beforehand to make sure the data shown is reasonably accurate.

Re: iWife

I think in the same vein, this is a perfect computer for my parents. They also need only the lightweight computing such as browsing content on the internet, using skype, and viewing photos. The ability to print over the network would be great. I imagine that Apple would support it at some point since the iPad allows you to create content. I would also love to have a camera in the front so I can video chat with my parents.

Re: Lap Happy

Jack, I like my powered usb hub with six usb ports. When I use the laptop at home, I just have to plug in one cable into my laptop and my all of my peripherals - printer, card reader, two hard drives, full size keyboard, and wacom tablet are connected. I wish they would make a usb hub with a built in display port though. Why did the media make such a fuss about a few hardliners objecting to the president's speech? Media should have stepped in to dispel the misunderstanding surrounding this issue. Instead, we heard "both sides" voicing their opinions on the air waves - disregarding the fact that people who were objecting were indeed a small and misinformed minority.
