Scary story. From personal experience (not mine, but someone very close to me), I can also add that besides issues regarding self esteem, there can be serious mental health issues affecting young people that can also contribute to substance abuse. Mental health problems may not be easy to recognize which can make it harder for parents to intervene.

Re: Picking the right conference to learn the most and make the best connections

Excellent suggestions.

Re: Best Camera Ever: Samsung Galaxy S Camera

First of all, great review Erica. Very thorough. And so this is the camera you took to the Stones (smiling with envy)! Do I need to choose just one feature? I'm a blogger as well and I live social as well. Feature 1: The Jelly Bean/Galaxy interface (that goes together with Wi-Fi capability) Feature 2: the 21X optical zoon and Feature 3: Video!!! With Slomo!!! I want this camera! Please, please, please (and I'll write my own review, of course). If I don't get it, I'll have to wait a couple of iterations (even though the price is very reasonable, I can't purchase it right now (blame it on the Toronto floods and my wife renovating our kitchen)...

Re: Expedia Film Contest with NFFTY

I am delighted to enter the Expedia "Find Yours" contest. You make very good points, but, in my opinion, they're somewhat flawed: First, "Anyone can make a record for next to nothing these days." Yes, anyone can make a record for next to nothing using Garage Band or even Pro-tools. The question is how good a record will it be? I've had the experience with one artist producing good quality demos at a small better-than-home studio and producing tracks with professional musicians and a professional producer at a fully equipped professional studio and the difference in sound and quality is more than dramatic (the difference in cost is also dramatic). So while "Anyone can make a record for next to nothing these days," not everyone can produce high quality records. While crowdsourcing presents challenges for both artists and fans, it is an appealing model - perhaps not to fund the entire project, but to complement it.

Re: Will You Pay for the New York Times Online? I have run a full marathon and a couple half marathons. I loved the experience, the runner's high, the sense of achievement, the relief at the finish line (the massage afterwards), but I would not really equate it with a marriage (at least not a happy one). I use the marathon metaphor with my daughter all the time when referring to her pursuit of a career in music - there is the thrill of the start when you're fresh and (hopefully) prepared for the race - there's the competition around you, the aches and pains during the race - the high - the wall (when you hit the wall, you feel like dropping out of the race) - the working through the pain to achieve your goal - the exhilaration of finishing the race, etc.
Some of these things may apply to any marriage, but in contrast to a marathon, if it's a happy marriage, you don't want it to end (by the time you hit km # 25 or 30, you want the marathon to end, haha).

I may just be a hopeless romantic, but I do believe in true love. I have been with my wife for 20 years (married 19). Time waits for no one, and we do get older. Men never stop admiring other women (perhaps younger), temptation is always around the corner (although the older you get this is less of an issue) - meaning the physical attraction to other women is real (and separate from love) - but, at the risk of sounding corny, the secret to a long marriage is true love. True love has to do with honour (either you make a vow or you don't), loyalty, commitment, friendship, accepting each other the way we are (and the way we evolve) and, to be honest, sex too, of course. Many men confuse love with physical attraction though and find it easy to leave their wives for younger women because of the sexual thing - these men stopped seeing their wives through the eyes of the soul (if they ever did). I see my wife with my soul (and consciously remind myself of this, when we have difficulties). I'm not saying we are soul mates (I've always found that idea weird), but we are souls who ended up with each other to help each other to achieve a higher purpose (if you believe in the evolution of the soul), to heal each others' wounds or at least share them and to find joy as well (as very much manifested in the rearing of our daughter). And to have fun! In 19 years we've only had about 4 or 5 major fights max - I think that's pretty good. So no, I would note equate marriage to a marathon, more like a very long trip around the world where you encounter obstacles, but you overcome them together, you see new exciting places, discover things you never new existed, let the other go to a different place, while you have quiet time - then get back to share the experience, help each other navigate different languages (and we know men and women speak different languages), assist each other when fatigue sets in and in the end when the trip is over you hope you will get back home pretty much at the same time and meet as pure souls once the body's given up.
As for films - that honestly represent the happily-ever-after, I don't think there's any. The happily-ever-after is boring, so there's not much to work with when it comes to drama. So I prefer the films that try to represent the deep emotional feeling of true love that we all want to believe in - e.g. Moulin Rouge, The Princess Bride, Chico and Rita (brand new film by Fernando Trueb), Romeo and Juliet (Baz Lurhmann), Always (Spielberg), What dreams May Come (with Robin Williams). Realistic films more often than not will only show the not-happily-ever-after marriage and for those there are many great examples, most recently "Revolution Road". An older film I recommend is "Always, but not forever" by Henry Jaglom (1985).

Gotta get back to work now - happy blogging.

Re: NEWS: The New Cities Win Big At The 2010 SOCAN Awards!

Congrats New Cities, Greig and Matt ♫

Re: You Can Now Log in to MySpace with Facebook

Hopefully this will help the ailing MySpace, which according to some reports, has quarters (not years) to turn its financial performance around. The partnership with Facebook should be good for artists, especially indie artists. However, before MySpace can breath easy, they must fix all the bugs that are happening since they revamped the site. http://www.myspace.com/help "It's Not You, It's Us: current bugs" The music player, the most important module on MySpace pages, is not working lately. And there are plenty of issues with other modules. This all has to be fixed and in a hurry (or perhaps Facebook can acquire MySpace and redo the whole thing)....

Re: Leaving Tourism BC, joining Think!

Best wishes in your new endeavours William. Yes, anyone can record and post music online today, but is it good music? And can new artists make a living? Books have been written about the music industry's corruption in days past and the Web has provided some artists with a measure of freedom from the semi-monopoly of the big music biz. On the other hand, the huge fragmentation of the music world makes it so much harder to make a living as an artist. While many people think that artists are spoiled millionaires - those are only a handful. According to Billboard.biz of 95,000+ releases in 2009 only a fraction sold more than 5,000 copies (and by fraction, I mean about 2% or so). Since many young people don't even buy music - they listen to it via YouTube for free - artists, managers and labels are turning to live music to make money, whether it's a band playing in bars and nightclubs or the big acts playing in arenas. But, guess what, the summer of 2010 is turning out to be a dud for live acts because of many issues, one being a very crowded market. So Prince may have a point after all. He believes that his music has value and that it shouldn't be out there for free. But Prince is (or was) a mega star - and I don't think he needs money to pay a mortgage. My concern is those completely unknown artists who may never surface because making a living in music gets harder and harder every day.

Re: Something to talk about

Excellent point William. What people talk about is what Sid Lee's Bertrand Cesvet calls "Conversational Capital (a topic we opened Canada-e-Connect 2010 with)." Japadog has generated a lot of conversational capital for its business and for Vancouver - similar to Schwartz in Montreal - these kinds of businesses or products (or destinations) stand out from the crowd because they exhibit many of the conversational capital engines Cesvet and his colleagues write about (rituals, icons, odd sensory oddity - susihotdog? - and others).

Re: Q & A with Mike Slone (Vail Resorts) on buzz.snow.com

Agree with Joe that the most important element in this initiative is the CEO's buy-in, support and enthusiasm. I am not sure how DMO's see themselves as an organization, but Vail is leading the way in seeing itself as a Storyteller. I am also impressed that they have a formal team with Manager, Social Content Coordinator, Social Media Coordinator, and Videographer. Great example for the sector. If a DMO sees itself as a storyteller and media outlet, the roles that are needed for this become clear. In the end content drives social interactions on the social web and visits to the destination.

Re: Must see presentations #4: Blaise Aguera y Arcas: Bing’s augmented-reality maps

Google maps have been the most helpful tool for me when travelling (at least when it comes to Europe and North America). Big music business does not believe in the power of music, but there are still many places where music is at the core of the experience, e.g. festivals, small venues, even coffee shops. Perhaps the pendulum will swing back the more people get tired of overpaying for over hyped concerts and will demand a return to just enjoying the music.

Re: Why Does This YouTube Video Have 79 Billion Views?

Excellent post.
