"loving your enemies" isn't synonymous with abandoning all forms of self-defense... love is also compatible with justice, which Jesus preached as well.

When he said "love your enemies" and pray for those persecuting you, I don't think he meant allowing somebody to come into your home to slaughter your family while you sit and watch.

I think "love your enemies" meant it from the standpoint of an "enemy" or "persecutor" as being somebody who wasn't really a criminal but just hated you for your beliefs. His kind advice was meant to turn that person's feelings around.

I addressed it first and foremost. Read the first sentence of my last comment. I'll rephrase. Why is ~~loving God and loving each other~~ our greatest commandment mutually exclusive to preserving a freedom based culture, fighting tyranny and resisting evil? What I'm saying is it's not one or the other.

I then went on to define politics as intrinsically important to matters of life and death and undeniably blended with many religious issues and that to disassociate yourself with those issues is fine, but to advocate that it somehow takes you away from the Holy Spirit I think is misleading since there is a place for it for some who feel called to it.

You are RIGHT about the hate though. Just the way you said it before sounded like since there is hate, we must not partake. Have you seen the hatred and demonization of the Tea Party movement and everyone involved from politicians to private people? It's sick. And please don't try to claim it's relative on both sides. I could show you a million examples of the dis-proportionality of hate coming from one side over the other. One side is inherently more decent and I think it's because most people on the right are much more in tune with their religious values.

pacifism? LOL, let's not go there, I think we'll just go in circles. I only brought it up cause it sounded like you were in the "just give it all over to God and don't care what happens" camp.

Throwing the word "politics" around like a football I think is disingenuous at best. Politics isn't a game nor is it a hobby. Why is politics important? Because on most issues it deals directly or indirectly with life and death, almost always plays a part in our values system (freedom over tyranny) and most certainly is intertwined with religion (social issues).

Does politics get ugly? Of course it does, there's no denying that it does, but does that mean we should just remove ourselves from the game because many on both sides like to hate each other? And since when is dismissing someone as a "wacko" somehow a manifestation of pure hatred? I beg to differ.

Regarding life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, again, another "concept" that is not mutually exclusive to our relationship with Christ. So it wasn't addressed directly, so we should just let anything that Christ doesn't mention be left to the trash heap of history? Christ never talked about being "green" either. I'm playing devils advocate here but you get the idea...

The reason I believe the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights was so instrumental in human history is because it was the first time in world history that a so called government entity did not GIVE OUT rights to the people but in fact acknowledged a set of INALIENABLE rights that come from GOD and not man. What a concept? The founding fathers first & foremost had God in mind when writing those documents and it deserves to be protected. Just like we should be good stewards of the earth, so should we be good stewards of what God has given us in this country (life, liberty, pursuit of happiness)

Look, I get it that some people choose not to be involved in politics and I have no beef with them as long as they don't obstruct and tear down the hard work that genuinely good people (not politically obsessed people) are doing to make a difference, not necessarily to "make a better world" but to quite literally STOP those who wish do destroy our way of life. I'm not a pacifist. I'm not going to sit back and let someone destroy me, my family or my country. I don't think Christ would want us to either.

I think you're misrepresenting what the majority of talk radio guys' position on the environment is.

The "wackos" that Con-talk radio guys (Rush, Sean, Levin and others) are referring to are not people who have genuine care & concern about the environment, (if you listened you'd know that many of them ARE stewards of the environment e. g. Levin, Sean, Gallagher, Beck especially).

The "wackos" they're referring to are people who are so beholden to their environmental ideology, they would gladly trample the God given, Constitutionally articulated freedoms of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness in order to achieve those means. In other words, they'll gladly accept authoritarian policies that destroy individual liberty in order to achieve their environmental utopia. Those are the "wackos" they're talking about.

These same "wackos" are the ones who've lied about "global warming" (unearthed emails from the IPCC), pushed crippling CapnTrade policies, claimed that "humans are the problem", back "over-population reform" (one child per family), etc.

I pledge allegiance to the US flag without taking anything away from my allegiance to Christ. They're not mutually exclusive, IMO. There are people who are DEEPLY in tune with their Christian faith while still VERY in tune with the modern day political atmosphere.

We're living through historic times right now in this country. Our society, in a lot of ways is fundamentally changing to something it's never been and there are millions of people who are just recently becoming aware to the harsh realities of the present day issues (that would be classified as political) and are fighting to preserve what God has blessed us with (Life, liberty, pursuit of happiness).

In many ways, faith and politics overlap because so many political issues are of great religious importance. (preservation of life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, among other deeply important issues)
