Great research as always, and thank you for making it easy enough for knuckleheads like me to get into the groove.

Re: I was a dino dork

No joke - those really were some bloody good pictures. Good job, and nice memories, too.

Re: Salt Softserve, Shrines, and Scenic Art

Super cool, Deas. "Cool" ... salt ice cream. Get it? And those towels - off the chain!

Re: How to NOT find a Japanese language partner

My friend - a man - tried to find a Japanese language partner. The idea was that it would be a language exchange. He ended up getting dumped by his (male) partner rather early on. The excuse? My friend was too advanced in Japanese. My other male friends who spoke very little Japanese and had female language partners never got dumped.

Re: Horse Meat

Ah! And I just read your comment about being willing to eat anything as long as it isn't slathered in mayonnaise. I feel you 100% - I absolutely despise the stuff. Pass the chicken hearts; hold the mayo.

Re: Horse Meat

I had horse meat last year and thought it was terrific! We went to a place that specialized in it and provided a "horse course" ... of course :) I recommend trying something like that the next time but I will say that the horse meat tasted so much like beef I half-wondered if they were pulling something over on us. And I wasn't prepared for my North American friends to be so horrified when I told them about it. They reacted as if I'd eaten my own live young.

I'll eat any animal, provided it's not endangered - but even then, I'd be curious. I was really disappointed I didn't get a chance to eat cobra when I was in Vietnam. I might have a had time eating cat but other than that ... game on. (get it?)

Re: Rainbow Hill

Thank you! Damn, you two really know how to eat. Re: the Japanese treats, they're nuts about maple leaves here! They haven't figured out how to make decent maple syrup but they do make tons and tons of maple leaf treats, including a fried version of the leaf itself. When the fall comes everyone rushes out to the country to look at the leaves before they eat 'em.

African food ... be still my heart.

Re: Eating Cheap in Sunnyside

A few years back I wrote a review for the L of a drag queen review where the drag queen in question played the Virgin Mary. I wrote it up as "funny but could have been funnier" and pretty quickly, some super Catholic nutjob wrote a parody of my review and my "infernally stupid" values in a Catholic webzine. I suppose I could have been more sensitive to any actual Catholic who might have read my review but, damn, what a kook. I don't know whether to be proud of it or ashamed. I think you should be proud, though - your writing is colorful and home-hitting enough to both attract readers you've never met and agitate them enough to respond, even if it's negative. All I know is that I'm dying to try this El Shater you speak of. Maybe when I hit town for Christmas!

Re: Shiritori (しりとり): Japanese Vocab Saturday Timewaster

つね - [tsune] nail.

Re: The (Other) Wall of Beer

Do I know about Pollo Campero?!!? It's the best. I've been eating it since I was a kid and I think there are a few branches open in the US. I have heard about the Corona one although I've never been. Fun fact: my dad's schoolmate invented the recipe.

Re: The (Other) Wall of Beer

Nice beer selection!
