This is what happens when the only person you interview for an article about infant male genital cutting is someone who makes their living from doing them. All the usual biases are here: shroud-waving over very rare foreskin issues, complcations minimised, foreskin functions, sexual issues and the human rights of the penis's owner ignored.

The facts are that
* the rate of UTIs in boys is about 1%, so no matter how effective cutting is, at least 99% of cutting for this reason is wasted.
* Phimosis is not an issue in newborns: "If he can pee, let him be." "Only clean what is seen." Premature forcible retraction is the cause of many problems that make cutting "necessary" including paraphimosis.
* The syphilis claim is simply false (but historically syphilis has been the STI that inspired most fear before HIV). The large Dunedin cohort study found no significant difference in any STIs.
* Cutting offers no protection from HIV to men who have sex with men, and may INcrease the risk to women.
* All the medical excuses for cutting were "found" AFTER it had become customary, to punish and thwart self-pleasure.

Parents don't usually have a choice who cuts their baby in hospital, usually an intern for "surgical practice" - obviously every expert has to have started as a novice, but even experts can make mistakes, sometimes disastrous.

Men who want or need to be cut may well find some benefit from it. This does not apply to those cut without their consent, and these men, cut as adults, who bitterly regret it: circumstitions.com/regret.h...

Virtually any intact man (like me) can verfiy that the foreskin is an important part of the sexual apparatus. Most men in the world still have everything and wouldn't have it any other way. It is very peculiar that cutting has remained the norm in the USA after the rest of the English-speaking world has given it up, and the rest of the developed world has never done it, all without issues.

Dr Palmer is out of date with his terminology. The UK is now using the term Variations of Sex Characteristics, which is better than any he uses, since it is non-judgemental and does not assume sex is strictly binary.

He goes on about "parental rights", but parents do not have any right to guess at a person's future sex identification and choose the one they prefer, then allow the child to be modified to suit that, often wrong, choice.

The intersex community has looked for anyone who is happy with the surgery that was done on them, and not found one.

Tolerance for minorities is unimpugned. Infant genital cutting infringes on the rights of the adults those infants become. There is no fundamental right to cut babies' genitals.

No, to age-restrict male genital cutting till the male involved can decide for himself how much of his own genitals he wants to keep (almost always all of them, of course). That protects HIS religious freedom. Freedom of _belief_ is sacrosanct, but religious _practices_ are rightly restricted when others' rights are infringed. Ah, that slippery word "routine". The AAP and Professor Morris mean "without parentat consent", which even they admit would be unethical. The rest of the world means "without medical indication or patient consent" which most of the world agrees is unethical, but which is how it is routinely done in the USA, and was some decades ago in the rest of the English-speaking world.

The AAP admits that the evidence is insufficient to recommend it, but falsely claims that the benefits outweigh the risks without any figures for the worst risks, major complications and deaths. Professor Morris achieves his "100:1" figure by taking the highest outliers for every possible benefit and the lowest for some of the risks. Trying to follow his references to something he himself didn't write is like going down a rabbit hole. When you finally reach the source, they rarely say what he claims.

Sure, the rate of later, necessary genital cutting rose when unnecessary infant cutting was reduced, but the same would be true of infant little toe removal - not to anything like 100%. On the contrary a Danish cohort study found only 1 in 200 males needed their foreskins cut off by the age of 18.

That is, by definition, nonsense. Atheists are, by definition, people who do not believe in god/dess/es, nothing more, nothing less. People can believe in as many god/dess/es as they like (including none) and still be racist. It is easy to believe that one's God has set certain races or classes over others. "The rich man in his castle, the poor man at his gate, He made them high or lowly and ordered their estate." It is also easy to believe that all people are equal without believing in god/dess/es when we know that we are all distant cousins, all the same species of apes out of Africa.
