It is no more unusual for anyone to repeat those trained to say there is a stigma ot mental illnesses, than it was earlier to repeat those trained to say there was a stigma to rape. Both illustrate having us operating under what I call social hypnosis.

First, please stop accommodating people who have been trained to direct the verbalization "stigma" against mental illnesses. Please rise above them, they have done enough harm.
Then, please appreciate that people with or without a mental illness are more likely to be victims of violence than perpetrators. It is a truism. It is true of columnists, too.

The idea of "reducing" the stigma of mental illness includes holding onto some, though no one using that phrase ever specifies how much they want to keep or why.

If you were reaching out to tackle "the stigma" of mental ilness, you would have an empty armful, it is a pretense, allbeit an interesting one.

If on the other hand you were reaching out to tackle someone taught or teaching that prejudice you would indeed have an armful, they are real!
