Shame they're not around anymore. Another surprisingly good one was 'jyaga butter' (jacket potato with butter) flavour. That one was really good, but the corn butter one tasted like feet. (>_<) Great blog post guys! I write letters in Japanese with my best friend in Japan (she replies in English) and I've been looking for some tips to improve my writing skills. Thanks! :D

Re: “Gaijin”

An interesting topic! Personally I have no problem with the word when used in an informal context. Of course, it can have negative connotations, and I've certainly heard it used in such a way that it could be considered very rude or derogatory, but never towards myself. it's a word I would use to refer to myself and my friends when among non-Japanese people who have experience of living in Japan. In fact, I work with people who have lived in Japan and many of us use the word simply to refer to ourselves. I do know of a few people who won't use it because they find it offensive though - and that'#s their choice of course.

Ashley made a very interesting point about 'looking Japanese' though. If someone doesn't 'look Japanese' but was born and raised in Japan, does that make them a gaijin or not? Hmm...

Re: What I Miss (and Don't Miss) About Living in Japan | Surviving in Japan: (without much Japanese)

I absolutely agree with most of the things you've listed here! Even having been back two years I'm still missing so much about Japan, but I'm learning to adapt now I guess. I had a pretty low two years, not fitting in in my own country, not really wanting to be in London, not being able to be myself... but fortunately I managed to sort it out. I moved to Bristol, which is much calmer than London and got my dream job as a travel consultant selling Japan trips (I didn't realise that was my dream job - but it turns out it is!). I'm surrounded by people who have had similar experiences to me now, and it feels much better. A lot of people basically told me to get over it, forget about Japan and move on, but that wasn't the right thing for me. I still need Japan to be a big part of my life and, although I miss many many things, I'm lucky that I can still keep hold of so much.

I hope you find what you need to adjust and stay healthy. :)

Re: What Was It Like Traveling To Japan 100 Years Ago?

This is FANTASTIC! Zara had some tall stuff though, and their maxi-style skirts and dresses fitted. Aeon shopping mall also had some stuff, but I found it impossible to buy pants anywhere in Nagoya. In Tokyo, I would always go to the British store Next which usually had some larger sizes. Shoes were tough too, but some stores do sell "queen size". Good luck!

Re: Kaley in Japan: Winter Trip Part #1 - Kobe!

Looks like a great trip so far!
