It would have been cheaper to let GM fail. It was badly mismanaged for decades. It should have gone into bankruptcy, have its debt service restructured by cutting out the unproductive dead meat, and sent on its merry way. The product they made was inferior, the labor was overpriced and the unions sucked the lifeblood out of the company. The 3 million potential job losses came straight from the Obamoron random number generator.
Your estimate of the final cost is grossly underestimated, by an order of magnitude. The US loaned GM $49.5 billion, of which GM only repaid $6.7 billion which was the initial installment at 7% interest, the rest was stock purchases by the Treasury. GM bought back about 30 billion in those stocks at a cheaper price. The Government did sell of the last of its stock but it came up $12 billion short of its original investment. Thats fucking criminal. It gets better, the Obamoron admin. gave GM tax losses to the "Old GM" so the new GM could write off profits up to $45 billion. So for the last 13 qts of profit generated by GM, they paid ZERO in taxes. The bailout was a fiscal disaster.

The Bankers forced the US to overthrow Khadaffi because he wanted to switch the Oil standard price from dollars to gold dinars. The same thing Saddam wanted to do as well.
