Rather than relying on a few precious 'elites', or the masses as a whole, a system can personalize recommendations based on people with similar taste to you. If you like going to A but think B is a dive, we find users that feel the same way and heavily weight their reviews of C when predicting how much you'll like it.

Re: http://blog.vexappeal.com/post/3459875114

"optimism of ambition *coupled with* critical thinking"

...zactly!

Re: http://blog.vexappeal.com/post/3459875114

A few other bits. Karl James talk great obviously. I've met him before at something. He really does have this great talent for putting people at ease. It strikes me that he has no obvious fear of things being awkward. I think probably if I want to listen better, I should try to worry less about things being awkward, fill silences less rapidly, that sort of thing.

Talking of awkwardness, ZombieLARP sounds in principle awesome but I think if I actually tried to do it I would be paralysed by nerf-addled selfconsciousness and just cringe myself to death on the spot. Not an exactly exciting zombie-based death.

I saw someone describe Mark Stevenson as "ahistorical." They had a point. Societies can and do fuck things up irretrievably. But he's also right about things getting better in lots of other ways. Again, it's all about the story you choose to tell, isn't it? (Although how many cultures have collapsed from overconfidence in a story of a better tomorrow?) Would a brighter future be more likely if we did in fact indulge in some doom-laden prognostication? If you believe it and achieve it then we credit the self-fulfilling prophecy, but if you crash and burn, well, that little story of yours was just a delusion of grandeur. I guess what I'm saying is his proposed link between story-we-tell and resultant-outcome might not be a sure thing.

Re: Healthburn

Also bad - being denied health insurance because you got raped.

http://www.huffingtonpost.c...

Re: Antivirals

Jess, yeah I'm not *really* claiming that there's some really dense person running the show, or a megalomaniac lawyer throwing out takedowns like candy. I just think when you get to a point where people are all like "hey check out this awesome ADVERT" and the brand has to respond by crying "no, no! don't look at our advert!" you've wound up in Daftsville, Sillyshire. It comes across as a tad clumsy, especially for an agency with a "global innovation unit" that investigates "original ways in which technology and collaboration can be powerful forces in the marketing arsenal (in particular around social media, mobile & enhanced forms of integration)."

I guess it speaks to a deeper structural issue with rights-licensing... I wonder how the old "get major Western celebrity to star in naff Japanese commercial" schtick is going, now that such things can be shared globally? But in this instance, It's not like it's a truly secret internal video anyway, "Walk" is there for everyone to see (worldwide?) on the Johnnie Walker website, just not anywhere else. It's like the rights agreement secretly admits that "hey, you can put it on your own website, I guess, where like five people will see it... just as long as it can't get *too* popular."

So, I'm no ad industry expert or anything, but to this outsider it just seems like good work going to waste, and that's a pity. But there'll probably be a few less people in the world decrying Carlyle as a sellout! Like everyone did with Samuel L Jackson and Barclays. Oh, right...

Re: Antivirals

FYI I did invite BBH to comment this morning, but nobody replied, so there you go.

Re: “Sink Venice” by Ikara Colt (download MP3)

I think the first parts of the puzzle are the easiest so I am going for a bit of Sparrow and Fire Eagle for now with Mapme.at like you say. I'll see what the mapme.at output looks like after a week or so of wandering around :-)

Re: Turning off Snap To Grid

Apparently so.
