So you make a distinction between ethnic group and race. Yet you refer to Kusanagi as Ethnically Ambiguous and not Racially Ambiguous. Wouldn't her look be her race and her origin be her ethnicity?

Your statements seem contradictory here.

I would agree with you if you said that ethnically speaking the Major comes off as rather Japanese. However, racially speaking she comes across as white. Which is what I was pointing out with the gif. The Puppetmaster is in the body of a woman that visually appears white. Mottoko laying next to the Puppetmaster has an almost identical body. This is how I was illustrating that Kusanagi is white. Culture, ethnicity, origin, none of those things need be a part of the discussion of whether whitewashing has happened, necessarily. As you've pointed out Asian Americans can play ethnically diverse asian characters without backlash, so the issue of ethnicity is not necessarily the problem.

If we focus on the race of the character(s), and who is portraying them, we can quite easily deduce if whitewashing has occurred. By opening the door for other factors, without a firm standing on what is and is not acceptable, we open ourselves to being shut down despite having valid grievances. This is not because people are close minded, but because if there is going to be a standard it needs to be as close to universal as possible.

Example: I am black, raised in America, my mother is white. The only consistent way for me to view film (in reference to this topic) is that whoever is playing the role must be adequate. It matters not for the color of their skin, where they came from, or who raised them. The work is what matters, and it is how we judge actors/films. Just as I have no issue with Johnny Storm being black in Fan4stic, I have no issue with ScarJo playing the Major. I will criticize their work, but nothing more. Less I be a hypocrite.

Did this show kick your puppy? How do you have personal reasons to not watch a show? Honestly, just curiosity, you don't have to answer, but what does that even mean? Did somebody die in the making of the show that you cared for, and the network or creators said fuck that person? What does a show have to do to be written off for "personal reasons"? I decide not to watch all kinds of shows. Mostly because I think they'll be shit or boring. But, what does personal reasons mean? Its like you have a reason that you think other people will judge?
