Don't go all in but do bet a little more actively when you are in position. Try stealing the blinds once in a while with a bet increase in a limit game and a 2 1.2 times the big blind bet in no-limit game. If you get played back, you can always back off. Once in a while lead off with a bet or a raise even with a bad hand. In fact, never playing the same hand the same way could help. Like raising or calling with AA. Most of the time pre-flop, you would raise. Perhaps 1 out of 3 times you could just call. You could even be loose for say three or four hands in a row and then tighten up. I will post more on that later

Re: Fellowship of the … ring games

Thanks for the blogroll ad - consider yourself added to mine as well. This takes away some of the plays you need to make in the cash game. It cuts down you ability to bluff in position and does make you have to play a tighter game. Not only are you watching the big stacks that you are against, you now have to watch the potential hit and run low stacks going all-in with their pocket pairs.

Re: Confidence and The Next Move

I wish I had read this post prior to playing a tourney at Poker Stars on Sunday when this post came out! I usually do not want to go all-in pre-flop. Some exceptions are when I am short stacked or the chip leader by a large margin. Why do something that will end your game soon. I have placed and gotten paid in better than 23% of the tourneys that I have played in the last ten weeks and my method has worked for me. Yet as today's post indicates, I probably should have gone all in preflop to keep him from calling. These are just my opinions. I am a member of the Poker Players Alliance and as a benefit of the paid membership I get a weekly Newsletter from Daniel Negreanu and he basically says that most top pros play the early stages in a manner that does not get them eliminated too soon. Yes, risk is good, but why jeopardize your entire tourney on one hand at the wrong moment. Don't get me wrong. I do make this bad play more often then I would like. But I am currently enjoying a good cash in rate by my style of play. Since taking the http://twitter.com/sebastia... challenge, I have improved my tourney play. My cash game on the other hand has gone south. But I hope that Deuces Cracked will help me with that.

Re: The “all in” bet – has it’s uses – but is overused

I totally agree with that concept. In a cash game I might act differently depending on how much cash I want to risk. But in a tourney, I can chug away maybe catch some cards, maybe steal some blinds, maybe even suck out. But I just don't see why I would want to risk my tournament life on an all in. Again, thanks for commenting. I like the almost part of your comment. I do in fact go all in and sometimes I win and sometimes I lose. If I lose I am not happy. But that is the nature of the game called poker.

Re: A guest post – from comments made by Jack – updated 5/20/09

Jack, you are welcome. This is the only second Royal I have had it my limited career. lol, The last one was in a live game at the Seabrook NH poker room and I only had one heart in my hand - the 10, the flop was AKQ of hearts, the turn a blank and the river was the Jack of hearts. Still it was a nice hand. Again, thanks for taking the bad beat so well. Lately I have been playing the tourneys on the large screen and Diane rails me. I am able to discuss each move before I make them. It does help to have the right atmosphere to play. Having said that, some day I would like to play in some of the WSOP events and I know that there are hundreds and perhaps thousands of distractions there. Consider your hectic home life as the training you will need at the WSOP. When you play at a casino, how are the distractions there? Is it a noisy place? Are there TV's on? I do play best when I can concentrate - which is why I don't chat during a game for the most part. Good jog on Carbon. A great bankroll builder. Use bankroll management and your win to start a #Raceto2500!

Re: Playing while tired still does not work for me!

William, our family's most favorite place in the world to have a lobster feed is at Young's Lobster Pound in Belfast Maine. I agree with your comments. In Limit Hold 'EM, straight forward play is the best policy 99% of the time. And paying attention to the board is important. Some hands are hard to put down however. I had pocket nines and the flop was 9 2 Q rainbow, giving me trips. I had already 3-bet it pre-flop and jammed it after the flop. The river was a five. I lead out and was raised, This time I just called. On the river a seven. This time I checked and just called the raise. Showdown, my trip nines, my opponent, trip queens. It is hard to put down trips. But you need to be open to the possibility that you are beaten.

Re: Can’t we all just get along?

Of course you will appreciate some irony. I was accused of chasing a flush draw by an another player. It was true, I did chase. But I had the excuse of min beating right up thru the river when I finally made my nut flush. Had my opponent raised me, I would have folded in an instant as this was No Limit I would no longer have had the odds to call. In the process, of criticizing me, I went back to my poker books and realize that the person was right. I have improved my play (I still donk from time to time) but now I know more. Had the person just said "Nice Hand", I would have aimlessly gone on playing and chasing and thinking that I was doing a great job. Now, when I donk, I know I was lucky instead of skillful.

Re: When to move to the next level

Paul, as usual, you have a very detailed and reasonable approach to moving up in levels.
