Self-Sufficient Homestead

Self-sufficient homesteading is a way
for average homeowners to use their property to maintain a more selfsufficient
lifestyle, such as growing their own food, raising small animals, and even
beekeeping. Homeowners do not need several acres of land to create a
self-sufficient homestead. They can do these kinds of things on plots that are
less than one acre. Most communities have regulations that would prevent
homeowners from having these kinds of animals unless the property is in a rural
zone. But self-sufficient homesteads should be encouraged by municipalities
because they help citizens live more sustainably. Land use regulations can be
updated to allow property owners to pursue this kind of sustainability and
self-sufficiency. Although there may be opposition to relaxing the regulations
that prevent small farming and livestock in urban areas and residential
subdivisions, certain towns may decide that it is important to promote values
such as greener living and food connection.

I find it disappointing that although the candidates response was limited to 25 words the Tribune chose not to print my response in full.

In fact I was questioned by the reporter about my response and said I listed my website for the papers readers to get more information on what I have done for the last seven years. I received no follow up email that stated they would not print the second sentence.

One part of the equation that seems to be consistently left out is if Pettengill is built what then? The current Pettengill project ends near the end of the Manchester Airport runway. If the road is built where does the traffic go that will undoubtedly go toward Rout 28? The four lane Pettengill boulevard ends at Harvey Road. Anyone travelling to Rt 28 will need to travel down Harvey Rd to Webster Rd to Grenier Field Road to Page Road all of these roads are much narrower roadways. Will these roads be deemed 'in failure' like the Page Road intersection was several years ago? Who will pick-up the bill to widen approximately 1.7 miles of road to get from Pettengill to Rt 28?

They did wait for a few minutes. The Town Clerk asked if they should, Al was supposed to be there by 7:15. The Town Attorney recomended waiting until the other two arrived. Steve Young turned around and said "At School Board training we were taught to start on time" The meeting was called to order around 7:10. The meeting adjourned at 7:21.

A question was asked at the October 14 Planning Board Meeting. The question was asked by a Planning Board member and directed to Town Staff.

Question: Have we already analyzed what percentage of housing stock in our town is valued at $290,000 or less?

Response: We have not done that analysis.

This is also not the first time the question was asked.
How can you say we are 1,000 units short if you have not done the analysis?

An order relative to The Distribution of Conservation Funds To Purchase A Conservation Easement

First Reading: 06/15/09

WHEREAS the Town of Londonderry has appropriated funds for the Open Space Preservation Program to be placed in the Open Space Fund; and

WHEREAS the provisions of RSA 36:A-4 allow the Conservation Commission to receive gifts of money and property and to purchase property; said property and gifts to be managed and controlled by the Commission; and

WHEREAS the Commission may, under the provisions of said State law, acquire in the name of the Town and subject to the approval of the governing body, any property to be conserved and utilized as open space and shall manage and control the same;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT ORDERED by the Londonderry Town Council that the Town Treasurer is hereby authorized, as directed by the Conservation Commission, to expend from the Open Space Fund a sum not to exceed $900,000.00, further reduced by a subsequent appraisal and/or grant receipts, to purchase a Conservation Easement on Map/Lot 10-15 from Moose Hill Orchards, Incorporated.

While the timing of the 40,000 amendment may be an issue to some, I hardly think this was a "secret plan". The Town Council discussed the impact of the Governors proposed cut to the town at several meeting prior to Town Meeting, February 2, March 1st again on March 2nd. Minutes of those meetings are available on the Towns website LondonderryNH.org

All of this discussion revolves around information.

I asked several questions back in November:

1. What is the Police Department Accreditation program?
2. When was this program started?
3. What has the program accomplished to date?
4. According to the 2006 State of the Town report, the program was "in the final stages of working towards national accreditation" . Why is it that in 2008 we still need another two year of work?
5. When was this position created?
6. Who approved the position?
7. Why has the Town Manager not responded to "multiple requests seeking salary information" (Londonderry Times article 11/12/2008) regarding this position?
8. What is the salary that this new position will pay?

The onle response I got was in December was I asked the questions again, since I received no response. The response was there was no position until the Council reviewed it. I asked why the position had already been annnounced on the Town website in November again, no response.

Now I'm hearing that this is all a mute issue since the Council has cut the contract to 90 days. I disagree.

The Chiefs salary acording to the Londonderry 2007 Anual Report was $132,547.57

This is/was a NEW position that was created, so if someone was doing it before why are they not doing it now?

Chris, An email to the Town Council in November, followed up by another in December. The Town Council Chair forwarded my questions to the TM after the second email, who never responded.

I guess Tina could send in a letter. Let me know how that works out. I asked several questions about the new position to support the LPD accredidation program and got NO response.

The Londonderry Town website has been severely lacking information over the last week. It would have been nice to post that a press conference was going to take place. There were only a tiny handful of residents present. There was no storm related information posted on the Town website until 12/18 a week after the storm hit.

Although a lot of us did not have power, and many still do not, we were able to get online during the day at work. The lack of information is very frustrating.
