I'm sure there are more hardworking editors that barely make any $ compared to the editors (and there are quite few) bringing home 6 figure salaries. Just like the publishing biz, though, it's kind of a crap shoot and luck that propels an editor to the top. Some editors have made careers on book buzz alone, which must be frustrating for everyone involved (yet who doesn't wish for that sort of luck?).
I don't think 'everyone' does a dreadful job in publishing, just the opposite! I think most of you are miracle workers. But you do have to admit, some clunkers do get by.
My point was simply, that instead of trying to navigate the many mine fields of publishing, if one has enough energy and creativeness and a tough exterior, self publishing is a viable option.
I'd survive longer working on a king crab fishing boat longer than I'd survive working in an editorial department.
That was meant as a compliment.

Re: What's An Aspiring Writer To Do? - mediabistro.com: GalleyCat

Nice Andy, something we semi agree on!
Not only does traditional publishing suffer from the headaches you mention, but add that it takes about 18-24 months for your book to be released. I receive many ARC's and the CRAP pile is much larger than the KEEP pile. And those are books that major publishers are turning out.
I might be following an unconventional publishing road...and yes, it's quite tacky; but I'm having fun.
When my first book made the agent rounds, it was amazing that what some agents loved, other agents wanted me to change. There didn't seem to be consistency other than "your grammar sucks."
Then again, I've read many books churned out from publishing houses that were full of grammatical errors. As long as publishers/editors bring home fat paychecks, nothing is going to change in the industry. Yawn.
Do you really care if you get into a retail store? Most people buy through Amazon anyway. And if you sell through retail, you're kissing more profits goodbye. I don't think you have anything to lose if you self-publish, because if it's good, if it's GREAT, it will speak for itself.

Re: Sarah Palin, Book Banner? - mediabistro.com: GalleyCat

And yet, no books have been banned. Here's the unbiased whole story;
http://tinyurl.com/5ed44m. Not that you'll read it. I'm registered Independent, but I'm starting to understand that many liberals are actually very narrow minded. It's okay to make fun of a 17 y/o pregnant woman (the Our Bodies, Ourselves comment made by Andy) but if I said "If Roe V Wade went go into effect before 1961, BO likely wouldn't exist."
Because, let's face it, a 17 y/o white woman having sex and impregnated by a black man just wasn't tolerated in 1961.
Much like we can't tolerate a 17 y/o girl getting married and not aborting her baby in the year 2008.
I apologize for my grammar. I realize it's about as perfect as the facts of the book ban story.

Re: Sarah Palin, Book Banner? - mediabistro.com: GalleyCat

FAIL!
Jim Stein was defeated by Palin in election for mayor. Mary Ellen Baker has not denied or confirmed the alleged conversation. She was let go after Palin replaced Stein. Some say she left. Some say she was fired. She has said NOTHING. What happened to the three source rule of journalism? It's sensationalist and irresponsible. So, Andy, if your ex's report to the press that your selfish and a slob in bed, I guess it makes it so. It's obvious this country does not have racism issues; we have sexism issues. It's impossible for a woman to be smart, sexy, and be a good mother and wife. BO has admitted his ties to Ayers, Rezko, and Wright. But that's okay, right? Terrorists, Convicts, and Racist Anti American reverend's are acceptable.
Palin hasn't affirmed or denied the book ban request; but because Jim Stein, ex-mayor, says it's so, let's copy Time magazine and run with it.
I have it from a good source that Barack Obama thinks The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks deserves the Nobel Peace Prize. Ridiculous? So is printing a totally biased slanted story. But then, that's why men and women fought for this country...so people like you can say and write anything they want.

Re: Another Voice from the "Publishing Is Dead" Crowd - mediabistro.com: GalleyCat

I think he sounds frustrated...but isn't the Huffington Post nothing but one loud whine?
I do feel that typical publishing avenues are going the way of the Walkman. I always think it's ironic that agents and publishers are looking for "new" "think out of the box" authors, yet, we see the same books over and over and over.
What I'd like to see is an end to complaining from everyone in the publishing world that "People aren't reading!"
They ARE reading. They just aren't reading what you paid your marketing department a ton of money to promote. Also, I've read some horribly edited books churned out of major publishing houses. Just because a book might have a Simon and Shuster logo, doesn't mean it's any better than that of an independent author. I guess my bottom line is: authors need to stop crying about what is wrong with the system and borrow my most beloved Tim Gunn phrase; "Make it Work."

Re: McCain Uses the “C” Word to Describe Obama - AgencySpy

I do feel it was a poor decision from the McCain camp, though I understand the point they are trying to drive home. I often have an urge to stop at houses that sport OBAMA signs, knock on the door, and ask the BO supporters where he stands on the issues. My guess is that they wouldn't know (and since he flip flops, that's understandable). Frankly, I trust James Fry more than I trust those two. Kidding. Gossip Girl. Harry Potter. Twilight series.
I believe people of any age will put away their computer and pick up a book if it's great.
It's not the internet creating short attention spans, it's the lack of great books being published.

Re: Want to Find New Readers?
