I'm going to make the final edit of the book tomorrow. I'll still add your photo if I receive it in the next 24 hours. Sorry to be pushy, the task of editing this book has been dragging for a while, I want it to be published tomorrow night.

Thanks Clare, it worked, but the resolution of your photo (604x565) is way too small for print, it couldn't go into the book :( If you don't have that one in higher resolutions, do you have any of the other selected entries?

Right, what you can do is upload it to any competition on inspi.re (temporarily) and tell me which one. When I've retrieved the photo I'll let you know and you can delete the entry. Easy enough, I hope!

People on the list were designated. If you're on the list above then obviously I'd like you to send me the nominated picture! If you're not I might make a second round where people who haven't been designated can submit photos, but with the condition that the photo they're sending has made it to the top 3 of its respective competition on the application. We're not at that stage yet, I'm hopeful with the people on the list, I'm pretty sure that half of them hasn't even seen this page yet, some people don't log into the app very often.

It depends on the length, which is not determined yet (I'll see how many people accept to provide the photos). I've had a quick look on lulu.com and a 40 pages color-printed hardcover costs 25 dollars. I need to compare with other websites though.

I've just checked and the video plays fine all the way through. Maybe clear your cache or try watching it from another internet connection? I'm not sure the video is worth getting through all these efforts though :D

Tu peux prendre un screenshot de ça, je vois pas trop où c'est collé quand je regarde moi. Pour la police de grande taille, ouais, c'est juste qu'il y a pas grand chose d'autre à écrire.

Je sais tout ça, j'ai voulu tester des formats différents, même si certains ont l'apparence pas du tout adaptée, pour voir ce qui marche le mieux. Sur le blog c'était justement celles qui sont toutes carrées et prennent plein de place qui marchaient le mieux, de façon assez surprenante...

Non c'est bon, on va attendre que la chasse au bug soit terminée et que ce soit plus au point. Pour l'instant je veux juste faire passer tous les gens qui sont sur l'appli sur le nouveau site. On verra après pour fire venir de nouveaux utilisateurs, ce serait déjà beau que j'en perde pas dans la transition!

Je comptais faire une vidéo pour ça, mais il faut que je mette au point un truc de sous-titres automatiques dans les différentes langues disponibles... Ça va prendre un peu de temps.

Well I think that the National Geographic online voting is a typical example of a competition ripe for abuse, so I won't take example from them. Like most online competition I don't think they have any serious anti-cheating methods (by that I mean for example, means of stopping people who'd actively ask anyone to vote for for them). By my book most online competitions are very unfair.

Back to the maths, there are weighed average systems that reduce the impact of low amounts of votes but those formulas require the average number of voters per competitions and the average vote. As we've seen, that can vary a lot from competition to competition, so I'm not sure how these formulas would be efficient. They also happen to be very cryptic, they're relatively complicated math formulas and as such most users won't understand how they work. I think it's a bad idea to have such a black box, which through the maths might be a little better but that people will question day after day if they don't understand how they work. While not perfect, the current system has the advantage to be easy to grasp.

A simple mathematical average (without any weight correction) would simply not work because some entries receive a very little amount of votes compared to others. It's obvious enough to everyone that a photo which receives a single 5-star vote shouldn't win compared to other photos, and this case does happen.

By the way for the math-hungry, an anonymized version of the database had been released some time ago on the request of a user, so anyone who can come up with a better score calculation can put it to the test on the real data without my intervention. And that's generally where the request of "please find a better system" stops...

Also i think that even if I switched formulas, the top 3 would probably remain the same. When you look at the votes the winning entries always have a high number of high votes. So if switching formula mostly shuffles people who are in the middle rankings, it doesn't have much interest IMHO.

Lastly, you're right, from a mathematical standpoint forcing people to vote on every single entry would make the current system, or a basic average system, mathematically perfectly fair. However this would make the website a real pain to use and people just wouldn't do it. With the points system I'll try to drive people to vote more, but really on a behavior level people who vote on every single entry are UFOs. I want to keep the website engaging, so the perfect solution doesn't exist, I'm afraid. You might think that other websites do a better job, but are they open about how they calculate their scores? If not, then it could be completely unfair for all you know.

It seems easy to use as a publisher, they have an online book editor which is a bit tedious to use and limited by the templates, but there was another option where I could send a PDF, which is exactly what I would need. I think I'm going to make a book with photos of my own and order it, just to test the whole process.
