Agreed, they have an history of removing features for the sake of it (like the tree pane view). Believe me, I would love to have a DE with the power of KDE and the consistency of GNOME :D Unfortunately, that's just utopistic!

Yeah I know his videos and I agree, GNOME devs are kind of strict about design and close themselves out, but in the other hand I think having a set design helps them achieve the consistency you too notice. If you implement lots of different ideas from lots of different people just because it's open source you end up with a mess :)

Not a fanboy at all. I like GNOME for its looks and consistency, KDE for its features and XFCE for its lightness, but I realize GNOME lags, KDE is a bit of a mess in its UI and XFCE lacks some features other DEs have.

Your only points are only about GNOME Shell having a single thread. Hell, Unity is a Compiz plugin and, unless they managed to have multithreaded plugins, it has the same design flaw as GNOME Shell. And I've seen Unity crapping out A LOT of times, while I don't remember GNOME Shell crashing so often.

Finally a detailed answer :D I swore I saw two different processes for mutter and the shell, so I assumed that they were just using the same library but on two different processes: one for the WM and one for the shell.

By the way, as "animations" I meant the maximize and minimize animations, not the ones in the shell itself.

Never said the shell was totally smooth. Infact the shell itself lags sometimes on a powerful machine especially when I open the activities view. The window manager never lagged to me instead.

By the way, it's the shell that is dependent by libmutter, not the WM itself which is a completely separate process. Mutter as a WM can live without the shell, you can even run it on XFCE and they use it as a fork of it in Cinnamon too.

EDIT: A better example would be Pantheon, which uses Gala, based on libmutter and independent from GNOME Shell itself.

And animations are managed by the window manager, Mutter, not the shell itself
