That movie stomps all over almost anything made today, but as I get older that's become one of my favorite scenes.

Re: STAR TREK BEYOND Is Now Filming!!

You are aware you're on the Internet, aren't you? :)

Don't really see how making valid points about a movie or countering your assertions is in any way nit picking, but go on...

Re: STAR TREK BEYOND Is Now Filming!!

I can't remember if I read it in Red Mafiya or McMafia, but apparently when the Soviet Union collapsed the only part of their economy that had worked was selling oil on the open market and then redistributing that throughout the economy. The only guys who knew anything about running that department, once the government was no more, were the black marketeers, and they became billionaires overnight, resulting in the current set of scumbag oligarchs we have today.

Which has not a lot to do with Trek, but is nonetheless interesting. :)

Re: STAR TREK BEYOND Is Now Filming!!

I would assume you're talking to Legz there as I am an old-ass fella and was 20 when ST:UC came out, so I got to see all the fun of the end of the Cold War, China nearly imploding, et al...and it sounds like you did too, Real Deal. :)

Re: STAR TREK BEYOND Is Now Filming!!

You're comparing two very different films, but there's a big difference between Cho being one of many action guys in the new film and TOS fandom waiting years and years to see Takei take his rightful place as a ship's captain. And there's nothing wrong with political intrigue. Back in the day, blockbusters were allowed to have half a brain when it came to something beyond pew pew laser fights. Comparing the back and forth power plays of Trek's many races and governments, which have a long and storied tradition across the franchises, and the near-nonsensical, half-baked "politics" of Phantom Menace is...not optimal.

Re: STAR TREK BEYOND Is Now Filming!!

Maybe they do, and if so I'll be as happy as anyone else to celebrate it should that come to pass. But when the studio asks Pegg to make it less like Trek (from an interview with Pegg) and wants it to be more like Guardians of the Galaxy (a terrible idea, GotG is fun but Trek it emphatically isn't) I hold out little if any hope. Bro Trek and Bro Trek 2: Into Bro made scads of money for them. Why would they change their approach?

Re: STAR TREK BEYOND Is Now Filming!!

Based on what? There's great political intrigue, solid character work, Spock being awesome, Christopher Plummer also being awesome, that great weightless sequence (weightless blood was a cool bit of VFX at the time), Sulu kicking ass from the captain's chair of the Excelsior, excellent score, some good tie-ins and a fantastic passing the torch to the TNG crew.

Re: STAR TREK BEYOND Is Now Filming!!

The problem with the new Trek films is that beyond the surface gloss and some pretty decent performances (Quinto, Urban) they don't feel anything like Trek at all. Even the crappiest of the TOS and TNG films still felt like Trek. Hell, I've been watching a few Voyagers on Netflix and mediocre as that series is, it still has the ineffable *thing* that makes Trek decent. Star Trek Beyond will, despite Pegg being a decent writer and Lim a good director, be nothing but a noisy brofest. Star Trek deserves better than that.

Also, whoever talked down Undiscovered Country can go to hell. My top three are, WoK, Undiscovered Country and First Contact.

Re: Shots From The Filming Of The NINJA TURTLES Sequel Reveals Bebops, Rocksteady, Shredder, Karai!!

Yes! Books were king, and I find as time goes on and I get assaulted by same-y CG nonsense, my friend the book is taking top prize again.

This also reminds me of what a fiend I was for novelizations back when VCRs were not plentiful and movies cost $90 to own.

Re: Wait...will we actually get to see MACHETE KILLS IN SPACE?!!

Rodriguez has been spinning his wheels for at least a decade. and if you want superior grindhouse, look no further than Astron-6's Father's Day.

Re: A Few Quick Shots From Tomorrow’s TERMINATOR GENISYS Trailer!!

All the T2 trailers were outstanding. I've seen it three times in the theatre, the first being the 35mm restored rerelease in 1989, and the second being a scratched up version of that print a few years ago.

This was likely the best version I've seen thus far, hands down.

Re: Dangerfield! - The Return of the Native - Alex Balk

This might be just another example of my encroaching middle-aged confusion with the kids and their doin's, but I for one just don't get the cult of micro-personality built around various Gawker scribes. Maybe it's because it's a club I was never invited to and would feel weird at anyway, but everything on that site (and to do with a certain set of quasi-incestuous NY bloggers) seems kind of "nyah nyah hipster scarf" to me. But then I don't get why anyone would watch terribly put-together Web videos on Youtube starring idiot vloggers talking about nothing either, so maybe I've hit the inevitable "huh?" stage of life where nothing makes sense anymore and it's time for a nap already.
