Great article, Mark. I made the effort to attend a conference the other day and met customers (readers) who are turning out to be crucial to development, and support. I thought it was just a lucky break but now I understand that putting yourself out there creates those breaks. Thanks again.

Thanks Lee - I didn't know about the Lync client release, due later this month according to Mary-Jo Foley at ZDNet. Have updated the article.
Will have to test out the browsers – is it really full compatibility?

Daniel, I see you're a gmail user. It's not a Skype phone that appears in your contacts, it's Google Voice which is the Google equivalent to Skype but cheaper, apparently. You need to download the plugin here. Might not work, depends which country you're in.

Thanks Loryan, some fair points there. I had a look at the Office 365 Marketplace (have to confess I didn't know it existed!) and it only has 44 applications on there. I'll follow up with Microsoft and find out what the requirements are for the marketplace.

I agree - I think Lync could be the kingmaker. I saw it connected to Lync Server and it's very impressive. Once it gets critical mass it will be very hard to stop.

@JB You're right on the money. For most small businesses it's far harder to manage the risk and cost of running IT themselves versus paying someone else to do it. But until cloud-based technologies arrived, outsourcing was too expensive for small business.
I think a lot of these concerns were raised and dealt with during the rise of outsourcing for enterprises a decade ago. It would be interesting to do a comparison...

Looks like Apple still wins on the devices front. I'll be interested to see how well iCloud works for businesses. MobileMe just wasn't a great document management interface, I think that's going to be the one weak spot.

@Jason I don't think the same problem/limitation applies to online email platforms such as Gmail and presumably Exchange Online, both of which have 25GB inboxes. Also some enterprise licences of Office 365 which uses Exchange Online come with unlimited inboxes. I'm guessing the problem you're referring to is limited to on-premise mail servers only?

@js iCloud replaces MobileMe which was used by freelancers and other small businesses, so a review in this context is relevant to those readers. (I updated the intro of the article to make that clearer.) The fact that MobileMe could store PDFs and iCloud can't is a step backwards.Also worth pointing out that Apple hardware is very popular in business now despite Apple's consumer focus.
